I have a 1984 sea sprite with a 3.8 liter v6. I just replaced one of the pistons put everything back together started it up and it ran fine. At least untill I accelerated. at idle speed it runs at a little high idle but none the less it sounds ok. I push up the throttle and it sounds like it wants to keep accelerating but just boggs down. It never shuts down just doesnt want to accelerate. I have called around and asked many people about this problem and I get the reply of bad gas, dirty carb, or fuel pump. I did take it in and was told the exhaust was leaking and getting in the combustion chamber. Is this a possibility?

the only catch to this is the motor never had these type of problems before. The boat was being used everything was fine heard a noice stopped the motor pulled it in found it needed a piston. I repleaced the piston didnt change anything else except the gaskets. Any thoughts on what this could be I am at the end of my rope trying to figure this out. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

the piston head had some damage to it but now I am finding water in the combustion chambers. the only thing is the motor was running without this problem pulled apart and now this is a problem. cant tell where water can get in. I have new exhaust gaskets on and never seperated the manifolds.

Ayuh,... That piston says it was detonating Before ya tore it down...

Re: bogging down engine

everything was fine with the head. I only took off one head and am having the problem with both sides. I cant imagine that out of nowhere both heads cracked or randomly had both head gaskets go bad. I dont doubt that is was detonation but I just need to find how water is getting in.

Re: bogging down engine

Is the water getting into all the cylinders or just certain ones. Improperly installed intake gasket can allow water into the cylinders but more commonly just lets it get into the oil. Incorrect head gaskets with the wrong water jacket holes can cause this as well. Did you use a factory gasket or an autozone one for a motor in a car? That 3.8L is based on a Buick design and GM is notorious for having multiple designs for different makes that don't cross over well.

Re: bogging down engine

from what I can tell just certain cylinders. I pulled one plug it didnt look like it had water on it pulled another one it had water on it. These two plugs were on the side I pulled apart. I pulled another plug on the side I didnt touch and it poured out of the chamber. So this tells me that it is possible it is getting in all but like I said one I pulled off did not appear to have water on it. The head gasket that is in the side I replaced is an exact match to the old. (not an auto zone gasket) But there is no doubt that water is getting in the chambers. I just cant tell where
