I found an 89 Cajun bass boat. It's a 17' with 150hp merc and a trolling motor. the boat is in decent shape. Some fading on the fiberglass. The trailer is in decent shape. Some rust. The guy wants $1500.00. Doesn't that sound awefully low?

Mike

Re: Boats

What is the temperature outside. The colder the weather the cheaper the boats. Sounds like a descent buy.

Arlan

Re: Boats

If the boat is in fair condition the price is very low. According to NADA, a running 150 HP Merc depending on the model is worth between 1700.00 and 2200.00.(not including boat, trolling mtr or trailer)

Something is very wrong with that boat. I wouldn't consider buying without splashing it first.

Check NADA about boat and trailer at link below.
http://www2.nadaguides.com/

Goog Luck!!!

Re: Boats

I'm just a little leary of it. It sounds like one of those "too good to be true" deals. I have another boat that I'm considering. It's a 1986 15' Blazer. Trailer has been repainted, new trolling motor, new carpet, new depth finder, 35hp Mercury w/electric trim/tilt, stick steering for $2500.00.

Where is the boat at. I may need a bass boat.

If the motor runs well, the money is right.

Arlan

Re: Boats

Sounds like the 2nd boat has an honest price for the boat.

You know the old saying "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is"

I looked further into the boat on NADA and your first boat(boat, moter and trailer), in good working order is worth 4 to 6 grand.

Do the research NADA don't lie and you know what options are on the boat and what the appearence is to rate it.

Like I said splash it, run that moter under load not just in the driveway. There is too much difference in the published value and the price.

It still might be a good buy even if something is wrong you can use the savings to fix it up right.

Good Luck ;)

Re: Boats

Do you think it's impolite on a boat like that to ask if I can take it to get a compression check done? Or even if I can get it out on the water?

Re: Boats

Definitely not, I've asked many times when purchasing a boat of a car. I don't think he'll let you take the boat out yourself. Ask him to take you out. He may or not.

One things for sure if he won't let you take it to a mechanic, that would be a good sign to walk away from this one.

He may have real good reasons not to want to take you out on the water and I would NEVER NEVER take a boat out without the owner.

How long has it been for sale, a boat like that in good condition, that cheap wouldn't be around for very long. Even two weeks in your area would be long, you can boat all year down there. 1500 bucks is not a lot of money so price isn't keeping people from buying it. What is?

Try to get it in the water, take it to a mechanic, you will have to leave something of value or a refundable deposit with him when you take it to a mechanic.

Good luck!

Re: Boats

Do you think that it would be impolite to hand him over your hard earned cash only to find out later that the boat is a lemon? That mistake could cost you a lot more than you bargained for.
Good Luck

Re: Boats

Any USED boat deserves test run with the owner. If he wants his money he will go with you and run the boat. He may just want to get rid of it, and that is why the under valued price. Unless you have 1500 dollars to throw away take the boat out and run it. You try on shoes before you buy them don't you?????????????

Re: Boats

Well I appreciate all the advice. I did go ahead and buy the Cajun yesterday. The engine fired up great and ran pretty smooth. Gonna take it to the mechanic today and find out if I got a peach or a lemon. The guy I bought it from really didn't know much about the boat. He had gotten it on trade and never had it in the water. We shall see. I'll keep ya informed.

Howdy, Dude.

Sounds like you may have gotten the deal of the year. Even if you didn't, that engine would have to be pretty sick not to be worth $1.5K bux by itself.

Congratulations!

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Boats

Just to keep ya up-to-date.
I did buy the 87 17' Cajun Maverick with the 150hp Merc. Took it to my local marine shop. Found out that the motor is actually a 76 model Merc 150hp. Compression was 130 all the way across except #5 that was 115. And that it has a Mariner intake and carb on it. The heads have been shaved. So someone was working on making this thing fast. Has a jack plate to get into shallow water. And some kind of high performance pump. Other than that plan on taking it out this weekend.

Mike

Hey Dude,

Interesting watching from beginning to end. Could tell you were very excited to move on this, good for you for checking it out.

If he got it in trade (thats the key) he had no idea of what he had. You did your homework he did not and lost out on a couple of grand.

This kind of deal in boating is the exception not the rule.

Congradulations! Have Fun! :D

Re: Boats

I'm just curious.. Was this boat titled and is the title clear. I would have worried it may be stolen..
