Re: boats

I got a feeling you are dealing with a electrical problem. Maybe you have a simple bad connection causing one of the power packs to drop out? Who knows.

Re: boats

Well i talked to my mechanic yesterday and he took my boat and put it in the water.he said he got it to run wot by advancing the timing but it still has a little miss in it does this make sense to anyone?im going to go get it today i think and get a crash course in taking it apart and rebuilding it,not getting anywhere fast at all letting somone else do it.anyone know about what he said about timeing?

Re: boats

Basically he's saying that the timing was a little off and he needed to adjust it. No biggie, as I think timing should be checked annually on these older motors. New ones have an "on-board computer" to do it. As for the "little miss", well maybe that's fuel related, assuming he got the timing correct. This is where the manual helps to know "factory specs". How much is a "little miss"? Can you post a video of it running? Maybe it's inherrent in this motor? I've seen people chase "ghosts" in these things (heck, I've done it, lol).

Re: boats

Most DIYer's I run into usually start swapping parts in the hopes that there is a single magic part that when replaced will fix about any problem you can possibly have. Fact is, on outboards, just getting all the parts adjusted and all working together at the same time is all that is needed. Or they say a certain part looked fine. But, if you don't know what a bad one looks like or what a good one looks like how do you know if it "Looks" Ok or not?

The OEM service manual has all sorts of tests, setting, ways to check things, adjustments, etc. Do you have an OEM manual (PS Seloc and Clymers are ok if all you want to do change spark plugs). Do you have the tools to do the tests properly? If not, then you are back to swapping parts and hoping it works.

Re: boats

Re: boats

There is a "build date" stamped on tha block half. Port side. It will be at tha base of number 2 clyinder (top port clyinder) where tha two block halves bolt together. Kinda right behind tha timing advance arm. It will be small 1/8" numbers. M/D/YR. All V6's have this on 'em. Some are kinda hard to read but ITS there...............This elliminates all doubt on age.

Re: boats

Nope. Its on tha left "side". Base of top clyinder. Look at where tha block halves are bolted together. Kinda "behind" tha advance timing arm. Might be on tha "flange" part of tha rear block half. Might be a little to tha right on tha base of tha clyinder itself. Its gonna be in that gerenal area somewhere.........
