Re: Boating in Michigan

Ok...you've been to many of the places that I'd normally suggest...so here's one a bit off the beaten path.:)

Fletcher's pond west of Alpena. It is pretty unique, as it is the largest nesting grounds for osprey/seahawks in the midwest. They have built many towers to help them with locations and you can hang out there and watch them catch fish, to bring back to their young.

Excellent fishing too, if you hook a bluegill and reel it in slowly a huge pike will surely try to take it from you.

fletchers pond is great, my dad took me there groin up. very worth the trip

Re: Boating in Michigan

There are so many places to boat in Michigan it would take a lifetime to visit them all. Over my years of boating I have been privileged to visit many areas.

Back in my trailering days I hit many of the inland lakes. For me the best of the bunch was Higgins Lake. Crystal clear waters and just a lot of fun. Wamplers Lake in the Irish Hills is nice to but way overcrowded.

Moving to the Great Lakes, I do most of my boating on the Detroit River and Lake Erie. There are many places to visit on both plus you can on the river and Erie visit another country, Canada. You can also do that on Lake St. Clair and Lakes Huron and Superior.

There are many, many fine harbors and places to visit. I've been to St. Clair, Port Huron, Caseville, Lexington, Harrisville, Cheboygan, Mackinaw City and Mackinaw Island to name a few.

Michigans Inland Waterway is a fantastic 2 to 4 day or more, if you do lots of sightseeing trip. You will pass through 2 locks, 3 rivers (Cheboygan, Indian and Crooked) and 4 lakes (Mullett, Burt, Crooked and Pickeral). There are facilities throughout and both small and larger boats can make the trip. I did it in 97 and really want to do it again someday.

The 4 Great Lakes that Michigan border are also great bodies of water to explore. Michigan has many places to wet your hull.

Really could not agree more.
While I have not been to nearly all those places, I do have a few under my keel (belt). We are planning the inland water way for this coming summer.
Higgins and Houghton are both on the board for the next 2 years.
Its hard to find the time to get that far from home, but like they say, if it matters you make the time.

Have been very lucky to have had lunch a few times at Dockside on Torch Lake.

Good food and wonderful boating!

Re: Boating in Michigan

Very nice thread.

For the last 7 years we have vacationed at Long Lake between Interlocken and Traverse City. The lake is wonderful, 7 miles long about 1 mile wide. The best feature is there are 5 islands that are not developed, great for exploring and we also find a few Petosky stones.

I'm subscribed and look forward to getting a few ideas for ventures for next year.

I don't know if its true but they used to say, "Your never more than 7 miles from a lake or river in Michigan."
