Re: Boating for Idiots Lessons

Mare, as JB said you are no idiot for asking questions about handling your boat.
There are hundreds of little things but the quickest advice I can give you for basic handling is to get your head around side slip.
The only way to stop your boat going sideways (assuming no wind) is to steer in a straight line, as soon as you turn the helm it will start to slip sideways. Lots at low speed and less at high speed. Once you get side slip hoisted in you can use it to berth your boat.
And as the other guys said - Its easy to speed up again if you're going too slow but you go to fast and.....

Do you have a mate with a boat???
if so go out with him a bit,see what he does and how he does it ask him if he will show you on your boat.Take him out on your boat and practise.I still believe that experience is the best thing .Read the books ,take the courses and put it into practise >Remember the old phrase practise makes perfect...
so practise,practise,practise
Good luck and Happy boating ;) ;) ;)

Re: Boating for Idiots Lessons

Hello to my friends from New Zealand... miss those waters south of the equator... spent some time in early 1970's as a Peace Corps volunteer in W. Samoa, with many kiwi and aussie mates to spend time with, and remember those days fondly.
thanks for the good advice... I'd love to go practice practice practice, but my vessel is abed for the winter (although we are having a balmy winter so far.) But keep the tips coming.. I am keeping a record, so I can refer back once I am again on the boat. Trying to get as much advice and "book-learnin'" as I can, in advance of being able to take her out again. So every comment is appreciated.
Mare :D
