There is a group of us here in San Angelo trying to start a club for boating. The goal is camadrie, Passing Knowledge, tips and tricks on maintenance, trailering etc. and also to have fun. Possible thoughts so far include paying dues and providing a small scholarship award to a high school student.

Do any of you have experience with something like this? With bylaws and such? Are there any drawbacks to trying to be a non-profit club or shall be just be a group that hangs out together?

making rules takes the fun out of things. Stay a loose group, maybe create a FB group or some such.

^^^ I would agree. Start by making a Facebook Group or something to pass details and meets back and forth, and then hang out on the water together.

Later on, if it turns into something you want to make an organization out of - then start thinkin' about it.
