I have one to run by you... see what you all think.

My brothers girlfriend and her parents have been anxiously waiting for my wife and I to have come up with a free weekend so we can travel north and spend the weekend with all of them in their two camping trailers they have on some permanent sites. One of the trailers is the girlfriends grandparents trailer.

They, of course, also want us to bring up the boat with us (whooda thunk?). Well, long story short, this wouldn't be an entirely cheap weekend for us. Hauling the boat up there, plus using the boat alone will cost us probably 150-200 bucks. In addition to that, many of you may know already, but we have a St. Bernard. Being a big, heavy dog he cannot stay outside in hot and humid weather. So, naturally I asked if they would mind if our dog stayed in the trailer with us.

Well, now they're himming and hawwing about him staying in the trailer with us. We've already kennelled him 6 times this summer... at 95-130 bucks a pop, its starting to add up, and we're not interested in kenneling him another time as it would turn the cost up to 330 bucks for the weekend (without eating!!!)

So now I'm stuck in a crappy predicament. Either:

A. I tell them we can't go, and dissapoint them, thus looking like a prick.

B. Tell them we can't go unless you let us keep our dog in the trailer which has A/C, thus looking like a prick.

What would you guys do?

Tell them you have already done so much this summer that you just can't budget another weekend in right now, as that seems to be the problem anyway. If that makes you a prick, so be it, at least they're not on a boat with one. They should be happy. ;)

Option B right now.

Option C. No boat, but kennel the dog.

Offer to go up without the boat and kennel the dog. That will cut costs considerably and give you some insights into their motives.

Just a thought.

Personally, my dog is part of the family, and if he's not welcome, then ya can consider me not welcome as well. You can call n\me a p%#@k if you want...I have thick skin.

We've kenneled our Buster a few times over Christmas, and just the way he acts when he returns to the family, made me vow never to kennel him again. Blanket we gave to the vet came back stinking of pee...kinda makes ya go hmmm.

Just my 2 cents

I hear ya Jeff... we actually don't kennel our dog, rather, we send him to doggy daycare. We kenneled him at our vet once... never again. DDC is awesome.

When we go away, we are lucky enough to have a good neighbor take care of them for us. They have the AC of the house plus plenty of treats!!!
Is that a possibility? If not, I agree with Jeff. No dog..no trip.

Yeah, we usually have someone stay home with the dogs. You need a teenage girl that you can trust . . . they get a place to hang out and the dogs get someone to hang with. Of course, last trip, a neighbor told us of the band that played in our living room . . . :%

Good idea.
And if they don't like that then its...

No dog, no visit..
And thats my final answer!

And you won't be the bad guy.

Leave the boat, take the dog and feed him all the gas producing foods you can!!

My dog (actually my wife's dog) is a spoiled family member!

Just tell them the truth- you can't afford the cost of the fuel and the kennel.

Re: Boating an offer and a dog

Welcome to boat ownership EE.

The only time I have no one to go out with me is the times I want to go. Any other time, there is tons of volunteers.

And I have 2 dogs who share a kennel, but like you say, a long weekend is $130. Has kept us from doing and going where we would like. Don'y be ashamed to pass.

Hmmm... not to sound like a jerk but how did a dog like that live 100 years ago before A/C.

"Man up" there ee and do what you want to do.
