Re: boat won't start

hi douglloyd, isn't that frustrating when people don't know what they're doing so that they have to guess the solution, especially something like this that can be checked for sure if they're defective or not. my mechanic doesn't seem like a poser he just doesn't understand electrical testing. i don't know how or why electricity works but when i build an addition on somebodies house i can wire it and make it work. when rodbolt and googieman try to explain it to me i get lost. if people don't understand how something works they shouldn't charge to fix it. problem is i don't know where to take my boat now, i guess salt lake city is only 2 1/2 hours away. i'll let you know how the saga ends

Re: boat won't start

hi googiemman, thanks for your comments, before i took my boat in i would try to start my boat in my shop, when it wouldn't start i would pull a plug and hold it on the block and have my wife turn it over, i got spark on every plug. thats what sounded funny when he said i only had spark on 1 and 3?

Re: boat won't start

Remember me something... see my post on pulser coil some minutes ago

Only this small problen but I had no clue what the trigger was doing

And Yamaha mechanics made me change the coils going to spark plugs, then the stator, then talked about changing the CDI, etc then I decided to figure it out myself, it took some time since I am not an expert

Check first the pulser coils, it's easy

thanks for your comments french fry. i got tired of worring about my boat so i got my other boat and went fishing, i caught 7 sturgeon below american falls dam, it's part of the snake river system and sturgeon are strickly catch and release. but what a hoot, they were mostly 4-5 feet long and fantastic fighters. pretty ugly though. anyway thanks everybody for your comments and advice

Re: boat won't start

actually, if you so called mechanic is factory trained AND using the 1986 115 manual there IS a test for the CDI using the yamaha pocket tester(ohm meter).
doesnt work but its there.
fastest most accurate is to simply test inputs and outputs with a peak reading voltmeter and its done.
do a forum search on a home made spark tester and make one.

Re: boat won't start

In my case the problem was a kind of vicious.

I and mechanics did not make the tests as suggests Rodbolt, probably we would have then found the problem

But for example with basic tests, everything looked fine at spark plug side (like tests with your wife)

And at the end it's sure the problem was only one pulser coil, maybe working by intermittence before it dies completely, same thing can happen with the CDI I assume

Re: boat won't start

hey Rodbolt, i have a repair manual written by Seloc and as i look at i see a number of tests that you can apply to troubleshoot the ignition system. it tells how to check the cdi with resistant tests and how to check the pulsar coils etc and etc. it even states that it is best to follow this routine so you don't end up buying parts you don't need. i know i have taken my boat to the wrong place, i just hope i can get it back without having to buy a whole new ignition system. i have printed some of your reply's and will have a list of questions for this guy and there will definitley be some negotiations on his price. a good electronics guy would be worth his weight in gold. thanks

Re: boat won't start

hey rodbolt, i was thumbing through my repair manual by Seloc and it has quite a secton on testing an ignition system, from testing a cdi to pulsar coils etc and etc. it says to do that so you just don't go puchasing parts you don't need. i wish i understood electricity better. a good electronics man is worth his weight in gold. i have printed some of your responses and i will have some questions to ask my mechanic when we settle up. thanks

Re: boat won't start

electricity, for the most part, is simply water in a pipe.
water pressure = voltage
water flow = current.
water leaks=shorts
water restrictions, like a kinked hose= opens or bad connections.
the US taxpayer spent just over 300K teaching me electronics and troubleshooting.
in return I spent 6 years in the USN and was retired with a service connected disability.
Ill call it even.
my first 3 years in the USN I never saw a ship, they just kept telling me do good n this school and we will send ya to another. so I did.
and they did.
now I fix boats for a living cause for the most part its easy on the body and doesnt require much smarts.
but I am FC2 retired, not bad when I joined the US canue club as seaman recruit dumb bass and in just under 3 years was being paid as FC2 dumb bass.
google NEC 1121, my secondary NEC I was working on was harpoon missle, but my primary was 1121.
its whats on my DD-214

Re: boat won't start

great news, i got my boat back last friday. i called the mechanic to see if the cdi had come in and he said he just got back from testing my boat in the water and it starts and runs great. i said thats great it must have been the cdi? he said oh no it was the stator. the parts company sent him a defective stator and thats why it wouldn't start when he changed the first stator. how do you suppose he knew he had a bad stator? i really don't care, i will just chalk this up as a bad experience and never go back to him again. as long as my boat starts i don't care. he did charge me $450.00 for the stator and the freight to get it here, i suppose thats fair but when you get a different story about your boat each time you inquire. i really appreciate rodbolt and googieman and everyones comments and suggestions. hope everyones boat runs like they should!!!!
