boat wont go into gear

i took handle apart to fix trim tab it was stuck on trailer mode and wouldnt go down. replaced celenoids now it goes down but i have to use trailer button for up this was done by a mechanic. now the handle will not go in forward or reverse. 1990 sea ray 210 alpha 1 mercruiser 350 chevy v8 i had to be towed 20 miles on the ohio river please help thanks

I'd take it back to the mechanic...
