I have a 2002 VIP with a mercruiser 4.3. Have taken great care of boat, only minor maintenance repairs and no major issues. Recently had carb. rebuilt because of stalling problems at end of last summer. Boat gets plenty of use in spring and summer, this winter I ran boat on a hose monthly. Over the weekend I brought boat to lake to run and get ready for spring. The boat started fine, engine sounds and runs great. However, when I went to back boat off of trailer the boat would not shift into reverse. The engine would rev but no prop engagement. I then tried forward and no luck.. So I pulled boat out of water and placed throttle into forward and was able to spin the prop free counter clockwise. Did same for reverse. When moving throttle between forward, neutral, and reverse there seems to be no engagement of the clutch or audible sound that I normally hear. I had no problems with shifting last year and pulled wakeboarders and tubes. Also, no trauma or damage occured to boat. What could of happend between now and then? Thanks in advance for input.

When you operate the shifter, can you see the cables on the shift plate on the engine moving? Is the Throttle Only button stuck pushed in?

it was the cables, they were not moving on the shift plate. i manually moved them and boat went into gear. must have been stuck, now throttle can put boat into gear. do you think i need to change or adjust them or is it possible they just got stuck? im in louisiana, lots of moisture. thanks

It's not the cables, they don't break and suddenly heal.
You have a problem with the contol itself, not the cables.
