Boat Weight

I am looking to purchase my first boat and I am having a little trouble finding out boat weights to determine if my car will be able to tow it. I am presently looking at a Sun Ray Strike 1 - 1991 with a 60 HP Evinrude. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to iboats probably under 2000 lbs including the trailer, motor and fuel

Hi everyone. New member with a question about weight. I now have a 1971 19' Rienell with a 4 cyl. inboard, mercruiser outdrive. It is or seems to be in very nice condition. Runs and handles well on the water (Okanagan Lake in B.C.) Anywho..I plan to take it to the scales with the Ezyloader Single axle it sits on to get a weight. My question is where can I get the original weight for the boat and for the trailer. Because it's no longer a teenager I want to find out how much water is absorbed into the foam and then decide if I want to go to all the work of re doing everything. The engine was completely redone 2 years ago and all new bellows, hoses etc. were done last year. There are no soft spots in the floor that I've found but I haven't drilled into the floor or the transom yet and I'm sure there will be something when I do. Your advice is very much appreciated.

Welcome to iBoats . Good luck finding that info on a boat and trailer from 1970, good luck finding that info for a 1990 vintage boat !..... Just a hint here on posting a question in someone elses thread. Technically , your post is considered thread hijacking here. Even though your question is related to the original post . I used to tow my 15' bowrider (70 hp O/B) with my Mercury Mountaineer (4.0L 2WD), and it worked fine. That Sun Ray will be similar in weight to that boat, if the "what I towed mine with" helps any.

One thing to consider even a little more than towing is recovering. I got a new(er) boat last year, and it's definitely heavier. The Mountaineer would tow it okay, but boat ramps around here can be rather steep and that 4.0 just wouldn't make the grade. A minivan with a 6cyl will probably pull the Sun Ray out of the water just fine - if you've got a car with a 4cyl it may tow it okay, but struggle getting it out of the drink.

Here is a link to all the boats made by Sun Ray in 1991. Strike 1 is not one of the models, so you may have to look at the US Coast guard capacity plate for the exact model number, then click the link and get the weight info.


The 1991 evinrude 60 hp will be 210# - 237#, depending on the model.
