I?m looking for my first boat. Growing up my dad had a pretty nice pontoon and a jet ski, but it?s been many years. Our family has rented a few times over the last year or two and really enjoyed it. I think I?m ready to become owner. I?m looking to purchase a small bowrider 18-22 foot, 8-10 people. I would think the average load would be 2 adults and 3 tweens(daughter + a friend or two). Maybe at most 4 adults, 4 tweens/smaller children. I really concerned with getting an under powered boat especially at full load. Looking for something that planes pretty quick and is capable of doing 45ish full load and maybe 50-55 with 4 people.

We live five minutes away from a ramp into the Ohio river and there are some pretty cool restaurants with docks. It would be great to be able to drop in for several hours without really planning it out. This type of trip the extra speed would really help to move up the river to our destination quick.
Budget well I?d like to stay 10-15K, I could maybe bump it up if I really needed too. I don?t want to pick up any debt for the boat at this point. If we really enjoy boating we may looking into some property close to one of the lakes around us(several 60-75 minutes away) in the next few years. So with that budget I?m hoping to pick up something used 2005 or newer in good shape.

Is my budget realistic 10-15k, 2005 or newer, good shape, and enough power to go ~45full load 4adults/4kids and 50-55mph 2adults/2kids? Any brand/model recommendations would be great. I?ve got a lot of reading to do for now, trying to become an informed buyer. Thanks

Re: Boat shopping jump start

hi red.......welcome to iboats.

you are with friends here.

actually i cant see a 55mph (that means a 5.7l mag alpha or 7.4 bravo) at 22 in the 2005 being under 22k. (but i live ub canada and dont know the us market,,,,,so i might be wrong)

but ....if you lower your standards just a weeeeee bit. and go for 19 feet at 45 mph.
your choices are open at that price range.

this will be a 5.7 L or 4.3 with a merc package (new volvo is great) the bayliners are great entry boats but will de value quickly.
the sea rays, fourwinns and the chapperalls are great bets for holding thier value.

understand....an 05 is about that magical line that if you own the boat for 3 years....it will be 10 years old when you get 2 foot itis....
at the 10 year line ....they all devalue.

disclaimer.....this is in a canadians view of the canadiam market....your results may vary....lol
