has anyone built boxes for these types of seats? I have two from walmart that I used on my 12' aluminum boat about two or three times, not the most comfortable but right now my back to back seats are rotting and the foam is almost non existent. I figure I could make them like jump seats.

Re: boat seat idea

that's what the P/O of my boat did for the jump seats. he just built plywood boxes out of 1/2" treated and covered them with the same carpet as the rest of the boat. i don't know how long they will last, but work pretty good for now.

Yea,

I dont know if I want to take my time to build them if they arent going to be any more comfortable than what I have. Also if they only last a year its a waste of material and time... Maybe I will keep looking for a deal on some new back to back seats.

I'm going to use the same seats on my runner...
However, I have glass benches already fixed to the boat so I plan attaching them to swivel bases (flush mounted) then fixing to the glass benches.

You're box idea sounds good - like you say, it's what you choose to make them out of.

Cheers!

pkrainert, here is what the PO did on my boat.
I think they are built of plywood, they are not to bad as far as comfort goes.

Jeff.

Re: boat seat idea

I'm actually considering making a box structure for my front seats when I get to that point...mostly for storage reasons...I don't see a reason to have them on pedestals since they will not be removed for any reason other than replacement.

There was a guy on ebay a month ago that was selling bolster seat kits for $100 each. They were complete you just had to assemble them. They looked great for the price.

here is another idea you could use as i am.
the reason for me is i want to make things multi usefull, armed stadium seat.
the ones i have when opened up have a flap down pouch in front, plastic arms, pouch behind the back with a blanket inside.
i have set many hours at games and races in these seats and they work really fine.
mine came from sams but walmart also has some for about $17, the sams seats seem a little better.
grandson at races once got kind of cold, reached around and pulled out the blanket for him.
the blankets are actually warm, plus drink in front and munchies.
my boat is a 69 starcraft islander 21.
the two back seat frames are the same size as the stadium seats.
setting on the front pedestals they look perfect.
the base i'm using front and back is trimmed oak ply with a cut out section of camping pad "walmart" on top.
the ply has 4 small holes were j hooks with wing nuts go through to hold the seats.
the seats can be removed very easily for other reasons and you also have the 4 blankets.
next season am planning a 1000 mile trip in the boat and am trying to MacGyver things.
just came up with the idea yesterday and have mocked up but will post pics when finished.
don't laugh, it looks perfect and comfort isn't bad at all.
something to think about.

Re: boat seat idea

I found back to back wise seats on ebay for $75 each. they're not as wide as the original seats -- nor as padded, but they worked out great and installed easily.

Keep your eyes peeled, you might find a deal.

Also, take a look at TD's posts - he had a few photos posted here to that effect. And they turned out nicely.

Re: boat seat idea

Picked up some seats one craigslist last night. They are benches that are 3ft wide and just the right hieght, they were brand new in the box for 100 dollars. Let me know if you have any input but this is how I Want to set them up. Benches in the back and two swivel seats in the front mounted on boxes that I will make.

Re: boat seat idea

Right now there is a bench along the back that is basically for storage and Im going to take it out for the extra room since these seats have storage underneath and I will make the front seats storage as well.

This way would probably be better for fishing but I think it would be a pain to get between the front and the back if i need to adjust anchor or whatever comes up.

This is going to be a winter project for me. I have 2 pedestals now that are going to be replaced by storage boxes. I'm going to make them large enough for those plastic tackle storage containers with a lockable door so I can leave more stuff in the boat.

Re: boat seat idea

PK heres how North Beach set up his boat with a pair of benches . He was planning to put them on the sides as you are but found it didnt leave much room for passengers Leggs set up that way . The way he has it now he figures he can remove one of the benches and have all kinds of room out back to fish. His who;e cpmpleted Resto thread is down in the completed section if you would like to look at it might give you some ideas.
