Depending on your boat, you may be able to purchase a replacement harness.

X2, and if you really want to go quality, buy 'XL' wire and not parts store PVC cased wire. All available from Mcmaster.

I have seen other members post links to good books on the basics so I hope someone will post a link for you. The most important thing you will need is a plan as the wiring is simple. I suggest making a list of what you want on the boat remembering there are things that you need like pumps and anc/nav lights then things that will make life easier like lighting and power points. Once you have a plan then theres 2 ways to install the system. One way is to mount everything then follow a wiring diagram and pull the wires one at a time, the other is to mount everything then measure between the pieces or use some old solid core wire to join the pieces together then remove the parts and lay them out on the floor (throw away the old solid core once parts are spaced) then rewire on the floor which is quicker and neater. I normally draw the main wire run on the shed floor in chalk then lay the wire out on the floor so it can be wrapped and installed on the boat as a loom.
