If someone was creative enough and had enough ambitition, could a person make a job out of this. Just like those people who buy old houses, restore them, and resell them for a profit on the market? I know it takes time and alot of money to get started, but in the long run and i played my cards right could i make it a full time job? I looked into going to UTI MMI (Marine Mechanics Institution) in Florida, but I heard recently that like 20,000 or so marine mechanics were laid off. If someone could please clear up this rumor that would be great.

Any opinions, tips, advice would be helpfull.

Re: Boat Restoration Job

You could do it, but you would have to remember most people buy used or restored boats because they cant afford a new one so you would need to be able to sell them at good prices. Plus remember that the work you do will have to be perfect, peoples lives would depend on it!!

I would suggest offering the service as if some one brings you a boat you can restore or rebuild it, then charge for parts and labor as any other mechanic would, that way your not stuck with a bunch of boats you cant sell...there are a lot of people with broken boats that want them fixed up but dont have the know how to do it or the motivation to learn!

I have considdered the same thing being unemployed myself. You would have to be able to buy the boats at a very good price, have a large enough place to work year round, and turn out quality work, then make sure customers understand that your rebuilt boats are better than factory ones because you have sealed the wood better. Paint or gelcoat work as well as interior are what will really sell a boat since most people buy on impulse and what looks pretty.
