Re: Boat Ramp Comedy Shows

While at my local ramp I was putting my boat in the water but it wouldnt come off the trailer no matter what I did it wouldn't come off. the stern straps were off the bow line was off so I backed way down the ramp untill my truck was almost totaly in the water when I noticed that the boat was takin water in the stern. Then I thought about having installed my new seats that morning (this boat was a old Starbuck, true tunnel)sure enough I had screwed the seats down thru the hull and into the boards on the trailer. I sure felt like a dumbass.

Saw it all Monday!... A mid 70's Blazer pulling a 30+ year old fishing boat with a canoe stuck on the top of the boat. The complete package was skidding down the ramp (backwards) with wheels locked up :D . I was directly below him haveing just launchd my boat, luckily he stopped a few feet from the water   ....waited until today to go back out. It was beautiful! only 7 (yes I was able to count them) trailers at the the boat ramp!!! had a fantastic day!!!!

Hello all! Its me again, the not so newby anymore. Aside from some minor probs loading our boat time to time, we have not had much probs. Except today, impeller gone.... sux... but anywho!

I want to tell you one comedy show we saw at Medicine Lake, MN. We were coming in to the dock and sitting at idle speed waiting for a pontoon and another guy to drop his boat in the water, when this expensive fishing boat cruises by us and waves at me and continues to pass me up to get to the dock. I was pissed to say the least, there is a line of boats waiting and he thinks he is better than any one, so he "butts" in???
Well, laughs on him. As the driver jumps out his mullet freind hold the boat to the dock (of which he could have moved up enough to let us in on the end of this dock) Finally his buddy brings the trailer into the water, he jumps in the driver seat starts her backs up and literally floors the boat on the trailer, of course sets him sideways and almost over the winch, he keeps doing the same thing over and over, throwing it in to reverse and slmming into to dock, breaking his ladder. Well after about 10 minutes these morons get it on the trailer... I guess when you are that impatient to butt in line thats what you get.... I just cant understand why people have to be such...dinks..replace that n with a c....

Re: Boat Ramp Comedy Shows

Just had to add a story from my other life - long ago when I worked at an inland marina. We saw all kinds of people, the novices you could handle. The ego jerks were another story! One such person insisted he show everyone how he could load his boat single handedly in less than a minute. Well, one day he backed the trailer in a little too far and put a little more power to the engine than he should and his bass rig ended up in the bed of his pick-up instead of the trailer! Oops! And no one went to help him either - after all, he was always so cocky and could do it himself, so let him! It doesn't pay to be an egomaniac or jerk - or both!

Well, I have been reading enough of the funny stuff, thinkin "oh, I would never do that!" Ha, was I wrong.

Went out today in my new 22' Monterey 218LS(second time out with it) to Pueblo resevoir here in Colorado. The weather was quite nice, a little overcast and slight breeze. We had been out for about an hour, when in a matter of minutes the little breeze turned into 30 mph, gusting to 45. We were about a mile from the marina, and by the time we got there it was a zoo. About 2 dozen boats all trying to avoid each other as the wind is pushing everyone around like you would not believe.

The ramp here is very wide, with six to seven trailers in at the same time, side by side. Made for some interesting approach shots, and of course the wind is a pretty good cross-wind. There were a number of near collisions, one lady put her boat hard into a pier, and a lot of general confusion.

When it got to be my turn, I came in with quite a bit extra power (I had to so as to maintain control), and generally speaking got it on the trailer pretty darn good, for only my second time out (my dad had a 17 footer when I was a kid, and a spent a lot of time in it...but that was 25 years ago...).

I was so relieved to be out of the vicious weather, that I then forgot to fully raise the IO, and proceeded to put her up a 100 yard concrete ramp!

Well, luckily it was partially up, and it only scraped 3 or 4 times on the way up (at least that is what my better half tells me...she was still down by the water as I am pulling it out). Looks to have taken maybe a 16th to 8th of an inch off the bottom of the skeg. I guess I will be buying one of those stainless steel skeggards now!

All in all, I guess it could have been a lot worse. I don't think (but then again, who thinks they are gonna do it) I will do that again, but I do have the drain plug thing to look forward to! :p

Marine Stadium, Long Beach, California

Group of kids in a Chevy Astro Van ramping a Ski boat into the water.

Stern straps not removed.

Boat Floats along with trailer and rear end of Chevy Astro Van.

Some genius un-hitches the trailer. Chevy Astro rolls down ramp and is submerged. Ski boat is floating in Marine Stadium with trailer still attached

Being relatively new boat owners...going on our 3rd year. We have seen and created our fair share of ramp comedy....

The one that kills me the most are the "ramp ghouls". The pathetic losers that camp out next to the ramp or set up lawn chairs just to watch some poor sap screw up.....its hard for me to imagine that people have so little in their life that they can spend their time this way.....sad really...

I've always wondered why they don't just come enjoy the fun like the rest of us? It's waaaay more fun to be in the show.... :D

Ramp Ghouls.. Interesting name:)
I am and have been a boat owner for over 20 years. This weekend we were camping at a small local lake and and I took my Fianceee' ( fairly new to boating) over to the boat ramp to see some of the boats, and the launchings. I personally think it a great way to pend time LEARNING and explaining to people that are new to the sport, what to do and what not to do. It is a great way to see what the cause and effect of seemingly simple items that can create havoc at a ramp and or make things go smoothly. We saw many things that made us shake our heads and she learned a great deal. many items that said she never would have thought of had she not seen the ( ripple effect) of some peoples lack of understanding.
Then there are the just plain ignorant and stupid people that lack any commen sense.
I would venture to guess that many of the Ramp ghouls are in fact boat owners themselves. Also, You may be surprised to find that a great many of the people that watch these shows, Are willing to lend a hand if asked.
respectufully, Brett

Re: Boat Ramp Comedy Shows

Once saw a guy with 17' Skeeter and 200 yamaha install a new SS prop at the boat ramp. He seemed to be in quite a hurry and must have neglected to reinstall the prop nut. When he went to back off the trailer, the prop came off and flew 30' out in the lake.

It could have been worse! Think of the damage that flying\spinning prop could\would have done to another boat, or worse, person!!!

Thanks to all who posted on this thread as I have spent the last hour laughing my A_S off, complete with tears.
I grew up with my Dad being a boat dealer that I later got involved with, and thought I had seen it all 'till I read this............ :D :D
By the way, speaking of boats with trailers still straped on, does anyone remember the pontoon boats that had the axle and all built into the boat??? back down, lift the hitch, and away ya go! :) :) :)
