We live at a Marina in the Florida Keys, there is not much live entertainment offered here in the Keys except for our Boat Ramp. WE have had a Venue of some Great Acts here which included but not limited to the following.<br /><br />*"The more power show" where people Impress all by Powering out their 30' foot Contender with twin 225hp Yamies, while throwing a 50 foot rooster tail behind WHILE the pull vehilce is pulling the 30' boat out, and needless to say, the Yamies do not get shut down until the reach 50 feet into Dry Land.<br /><br />*You know those Little orange balls that mark the overhead powerlines, they are not there to see how high your outriggers or tower is "shocking"<br /><br />*You know something is a miss when you see a Chevy attach a ROPE to a Ford for more pulling power.<br /><br />*Some scary ones also, the guy that is standing in the water, on a slppery ramp, with himself between the the boat and the winch, inside the trailer, aligning the boat on the trailer while his friend powers the boat on. Just "Close your eyes"<br /><br />*Inboarders that don't open the engine compartment or turn the blowers, just jump in the boat and turn the key, and while cranking the engine they say stupidly "something doesn't sound right"?<br /><br />That all for now, so those who that have left the plug out, or launch the truck, tailer, and boat don't feel bad, thats happens more often than you think, I've seen one person have his truck pulled out of the salt water with a tow truck, parked his truck and jumped in his boat and went fishing. :D

Time for a video camera. You could win $10,000. that's a lot of fishing gear! If not, then a site on the internet.

Talk about dumb. Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert, an hour east of Bakersfield, California, some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn't get their brand new 22 ft. boat going. It was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power was applied it just wouldn't get going. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they put-putted over to a nearby marina, thinking someone there could tell them what was wrong. A thorough topside check revealed everything in perfect working condition. The anchor wasn't in the water, engine ran fine, the gas tank vent was open, the out drive went up and down, the prop turned in gear, and was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water, he was laughing so hard. NOW REMEMBER. THIS IS TRUE ...Under the boat, still strapped securely in place, was its trailer.

Yet another "TRUE" Urban Legend... <br /><br />Although it's not out of the realm of possibility...<br /><br /> The story I heard was the people in question (a woman) won the boat on a game show... And it was'nt in Lake Isabella, but in the Intracostal Water Way right here in West Palm... :p

Ok, here is the "Scoop" :D <br /><br />The Snopes site is around to help shed light on the mystery of Urban Legends. Here is the link to "Boat Trailer story" there. They have had one person claim that an incident like it happened, but otherwise it is unsubstantiated. From the amount of times I have seen this and the variations, it seems like an urban legend to me. <br /><br /> http://www.snopes.com/humor/jokes/isabella.htm

Re: Boat Ramp Comedy Shows

I live in Vancouver Bc and Ilive near a boat launch called Rocky point witch is quite a steep ramp. There use to be a Bayliner dealer about 15min from there so every sunny saterday that I had free I would pack up a cooler and a lawn chair and watch the fun unroll. The best had to be the guy with his new trophy and unhooked both the winch strap and safty chain at the top of the ramp his wife eagerly backed him and the boat down the ramp slaming on the brakes about half way down the ramp when the truck and trailer stoped but the boat was more than happy to continue to the water. The guy was throne out of the driver seat but was not hurt. Im pretty sure the force was a right off the boat had a hole as long as the hull. the guy was not impressed. just after the boat was put back on the trailer a entalman approched him and asked if he would be interested in a power squadron course the youg man that owned the boat whent completly nuts and attacked the gentalman what a show.!!!!!!

Re: Boat Ramp Comedy Shows

I’ve had a couple of close calls at the ramp but luckily nothing has ever happened yet (knock on wood). One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen at the ramp was two summers ago. This guy in a jet ski comes up to ramp yelling at his wife the entire time to back the trailer down. As she’s trying to do this he is continuing to yell at her the whole time. Finally after she gets the trailer in the water he takes off and power load the Jet Ski. Once on the trailer he starts yelling at her again to GO GO GO GO GO GO! I had my back turn to them when I heard that dreaded noise of fiberglass meeting concrete. I turned back around and this guy is sitting on his jet ski, head down, silent in the middle of the ramp with his wife and trailer twenty feet in front of him. It served him right for being such a jacka$$ to his wife.

Trevor. Your right. Rocky Point is a hoot. Especially at a low tide. What I remember is the concrete ends a little too soon for low tide and I've seen trailers stuck off the ramp.<br /><br />Course what I mostly remember about Rocky Point comes from my teenage years and has nothing to do with boats ;)

I've got one for ya! Went fishing this summer near my home with a friend and two of his boys. I was reeling in a white perch when about 3 feet from shore a snapping turtle with a 2 foot long shell grabs ahold of the perch and will not let go. He put up quite a fight, but I managed to bring him up to the shore so that 75% of him was out of the water and keep him there long enough for the kids to come take a look at a great-grandaddy of a turtle, before the line finally snapped and he swam off still holding his prize in his mouth.

Re: Boat Ramp Comedy Shows

I managed a large marina on Tablerock Lake for many years and beginning every Friday of Memorial Day Weekend, it was constant comedy when the "Mullets" arrived. Probably the best I recall is similar to some already posted --- wife backing trailer and impatient husband. Add to that a Bayliner on a roller trailer. Remember the Bayliners with the design that had extreme inset for the outboard so that the rear of the hull was flush with the back of the outboard? I witnessed a wife trying to back, the winch strap catch was still attached, but the ratchet was open and after several frustrated attempts and demeaning remarks from the husband, she had enough and stopped abruptly while backing. Now add the sound of the winch ratchet feeding out at high speed just after hearing the squeak of the tires stopping abruptly and you have the picture. The Bayliner ended up on its rear, completely vertical with only the attached winch strap holding it from going over on its cap. Husband was clinging to the steering wheel to keep from falling out. We winched it back on and hoped their marriage survived.

Here's a tidbit I saw on a website.<br /><br />8. THE GRAND FINALE <br />Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert, an hour east of Bakersfield, California, some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn't get their brand new 22 ft. Bayliner to perform. It wouldn't get on a plane at all, and it was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power was applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they putted to a nearby marina, thinking someone there could tell them what was wrong. A thorough topside check revealed everything in perfect working condition. The engine ran fine, the outdrive went up and down, the prop was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in the water to check underneath. Re: Boat Ramp Comedy Shows

And speak'n of ramp manuveurs.....<br />One bright Sunday Afternoon, me and MudCatMary, my much better half, decided to launch off the Wheeling Is. Ramp. We got there just in time to witness a much new boater launch for the first time. We new he was new by the number of jackknifes he made down the ramp,(don't laugh, we all been there and done that) He finally got the boat and trailer in the water and comenced the launch proceedings. He left the wife in the truck and jumped in the boat, cranked her up, hit reverse, punched the throttle and threw a water column about 25' in the air. Needless to say he fergot to trim the outdrive down. So he hollard at the wife to pull up a little which she did and he got out to see what was wrong. So the wife gets out the truck and says we can't launch any how cause the trailer is still hooked up. So they commenced to unhook the trailer.....from the truck. 'Bout the time he dropped the trailer jack I figured it was time to intervene and help this guy out. We got him launched and I got in and filled him in on the "how-tos" and what not "to-dos" of his brand new I/O and told him to read his owners manual which was still in the plastic bag in the glove box. "STUFF" does happen along the muddy banks of the Ohio River.

Re: Boat Ramp Comedy Shows

Reading these stories reminds me of an incident my wife and I witnesed this past fall. We were on our way home from visiting the local bait shop and decided to take a spin down to the marina at lake Nockamixon here in south east Pa.just to take a look around. It was a cold rainy kinda of day and we figured it would be pretty dead.As we approached the ramp area we spotted a rescue boat, some divers and a few people milling about on the dock. There did not seem to be any urgancy so we figured it was some kind of training exercise. But it wasnt long till a huge tow truck showed up and the driver handed a diver a cable. Now we knew something was up. After about 3 or 4 minutes under water the diver gave the thumbs up and low and behold they pulled what was a nice dodge dakota out of the drink with wipers still going and trailer still attached. Later we found out the passenger had to escape through the window.I still shudder when I think a child could have been strapped in there. ALLWAYS SET THE BRAKE.<br />---- FLAHTHEAD

I also make it a common practice to roll down my drivers window when launching and retrieving my boat. I would rather look like "that guy" that you laugh at verses that guy you mourn. Everyone has heard the stories of slippery docks causing car dunking then people being trapped in their cars from the airlock made by pressure and not being able to break out thru the windows. anyway, Happy New years gents-

Re: Boat Ramp Comedy Shows

Now aren't the boat ramps just great fun.. I read all the post and had a good time.. I don't believe the one about the trailer and believe it been told in every state that someone just seen it last weekend.. LOL.. Come on... I know where my bow eye is and front roller and wench and you wouldn't have to go under water to see them. LOL>> Anyway this one I did see.. We have a medium size (1,000 acre) inland lake we bass fish on in Mich.. This lake is one of few if not the only one I know that has a 10mph speed limit and no motor size limit so it mostly has nothing but fisherman on it.. The club was having an event there and about 2:00 pm everyone was heading in as planned in the event .. Wow what a back log at the ramps finally we got to see why.. ::::: Ok I tell what I seen after I got my boat out of the water and away.. First very very steep ramp at this lake.. Ok Here this guy with a 22' to 24' Cabin Crusier not sure what make it was blue and white though.. and had twin I/O on it.. When I seen it, it was not in the water any longer.. Seems he back it in and must not of had plugs in it or something.. Well I sank at the dock. Hey it only about 3 ft There LOL.. Well next I guess he tried to put it back on the trailer.. He had a power Winch.. Ok then I guess he got it part way back on and the wench burnt out. So He got in his truck and pulled it out.. So here we are when I seen it The boat is about 20ft to 30fr from the water.. not on the trailer all the way and laying on the cement the trailer is now levered up in the air more weight behind the axles and the rear of the truck is in the air.. Not far 12" to 16" .. LOL.. and here stands Amad his wife and the 8 kids next to the boat staring at it.. What was he going to do on this lake even if he would of launched..
