I recently picked up a Starcraft with an 80's? 60 HP Johnson VRO on it. I am not sure of the year. Sorry I haven't posted pictures, I will. Anyway is there an easy way to tell the year of the motor? It does not have any numbers or tags on it? It does have a red plug for the electrical wiring harness.

A few issues:
The electrical wiring harness from the control box back to the motor was fried. Looked like it had a massive short. The guy I got the boat from started it up for me by bypassing the wiring and going directly to the motor with jumper cables. It looks like that the steering cable rubbed the electrical wires down causing the short. Since i had seen the motor run well, I am thinking that the motor ignition should be OK and that the harness is simply toast. Can I "re-build" that harness? as it looks like they run about $150 or so?

A plug wiring diagram would be helpful as well.

I will post pics tonight.

Check out the "Top Secret File" sticky at the top of the page. It has the explanation of how to get the year of your motor from your model number. Also has a link to wiring diagrams. You can check eBay as well for new wiring harnesses and might find them a bit cheaper. It could probably be rebuild with a lot of splicing and soldering but I think I'd spend the money if I had it to get a replacement. Good luck!
