I just bought my first boat... I'm new to all this and want to paint it different color. What do you guys recomend for paint? I dont want any expensive stuff cause I dont have a garage and so it will be sitting in the sun, but I want it to look good. I have been doing lots of research and watching videos of people using rustoleum paints... the thing is that they dont carry the color I want. Is valspar paint a good option?

Re: boat paint

Its a 1965 15' Larson Runabout, I want white bottom and a navy blue on top with a white stripe. Its a fiberglass hull, no damage to surface, just needs some sanding and paint. I will more likely use it on lakes since I live in the middle of the country, I got no intention of putting it on salt water, so its that paint a good option?

Ayuh,... Ya gotta be more specific, Valspar makes everything from latex interior paints to oil enamel paints...

Their industrial enamels are very similar to the Rustoleum brands...

Those words "I dont want any expensive stuff cause I dont have a garage and so it will be sitting in the sun, but I want it to look good." are kind of subjective. Everybody wants a great finish but not one that cost a lot. I understand, but cost of money or elbow grease has got to happen to get the results you'd like. My philosophy is, whenever I do any project, do it to the best possible way it could be done and then you don't have to redo it again in a few months or years. So that means a good sanding followed with primer and then paint. And a paint that has some type hardener in it will stay longer than one that doesn’t. The difference in cost would be miniscule compared to the effort you’d have to do to repaint it again in a year... Just my opinion. There are tons of project boat refinishes on these forums with step by step instructions and pictures to follow along. I suggest reading a few of them to get an idea what you really are looking for... Too many options and paints and methods to settle with one better then another...

You are right gm280, I finally came across some marine grade paint and that is what im going to put on it. Now I just gotta search how much I need to thin it out and how much hardener to mix in with it. Thanks you all for the tips, will defenetly be posting some pictures of the progress.
