It sounds like what happens after someone works on the waterpump.

Did someone have the lower unit off?

If that's the case,

you drop the lower unit

Place it and shifter in neutral

then re-assemble

Some should be in fwd. Since you have no mention of size, year, or anything else about that motor, it's totally impossible to give any specific information.

Now you know why Mercury sells service manuals for the techs to use. It's so things can be done correctly since they are NOT all the same.

Excuse me,

Apparently I didn't get your serial number, and fully discern your particular motor model.

but the "it" is the lower unit, and "it's" gearbox.

I am having the same problem with a 1989 70hp serial OC137125. In forward it goes forward, in neutral it is neutral, in reverse it goes forward. Pulled the lower unit and I cannot find one spot that makes it go into reverse. Just had the lower unit resealed. Did they put it back together wrong?

Re: boat motor foward only

Sorry, no specific help here. Manuals for those model years can be had cheap:

for a 2007 merc 40HP the shifter is in neutral when it comes off.
after putting it back on I will be checking that the prop spins (freehand, no engine start) correctly for each gear change.

go to the library, pick one up here or go to ebay......its a very good investment for now and later!
