"Boat Insurance"?

You BET.

Not for me, so much, as some other knucklehead. I went with $1M-liability.

Since my boat is "older" (Classic Boston Whaler) none of the major boat insurance companies would even talk to me.

I went with State Farm. They were happy to insure me. They made me a deal on: home, car, boat that I could not pass up.

Great Agent and service. No complaints.

what do you mean by deal, did you negotiate a rate, because i have state farm as well

Re: Boat Insurance?

I shopped all the major carriers and found the best deal with Progressive. Very good coverage, low deductibles and a lot of extras for $120/year.

I don't have any other policies with them but I'll be asking them for a quote when home/auto come up for renewal.

Annoying ads though.

There's something no one here has mentioned... Spills. Do you have any idea what kind of clean-up costs, and EPA fines are involved with motor/drive fluid spills/leaks on the water? Ive got a 56 gallon fuel tank which is usually between 1/2 & full most of the time. There are plenty of us boaters with far larger tanks than that. A 50 gallon spill can cost 6figures, easily. With a distress call and Coast Guard response, the spill is documented. EPA is notified by Coast Guard. EPA dictates cleanup. They don't do it, but they make all the decisions.

Lord forbid you hurt or cause someones death... Let's not even go any further with that scenario.

Please folks... Get insurance. It's the responsible thing to do.

Re: Boat Insurance?

I'm in the process of buying/insuring a new to me cruiser. In researching insurance I stumbled upon something and tracked the info. For information only...

EDIT

Unfortunately, that doesn't sit well with me and my current home, auto is with a very good company that subs to Progressive. I'm searching other options now. Travelers was recommended above. Why would you recommend them?

Re: Boat Insurance?

Think about catchnrelease's story--if his fire had spread to other boats and the pier itself, he might be buying all those boats and the dock, too, without insurance. Worse, picture that fire among a bunch of boats at a "party cove." We think of our boats as small and free-floating things, but it doesn't take much to imagine them impacting a lot of others. It's not a matter of how careful you are. When your number comes up, it's you.

They've covered my boats for 27 years now. My agent lives close to my house. Their service has been good. I know other people that have had claims and they were handled promptly and compltely with no hassles.

Every few years I explore different companies to get new pricing and they have always come out on top. Lots of people swear by Geico and Preogressive, but the fact is that they don't even come close - not in price, nor the coverage provided.

Having said that, since insurance companies are regulated by the state, pricing is different in different states. So, if you're not in NY Geico may very well be cheaper.

Re: Boat Insurance?

For sure give your current home/auto insurance carrier a chance. As was posted earlier you often get a multi-policy discount. Plus they know if they don't treat you right on one policy, they risk losing all of them.

Re: Boat Insurance?

I went with State Farm this year. No servey required. :)

$460 a year with $18k agreed value. I only paid $13k for it. :D

If I hit any underwater objects they'll repair it with a $200 deductible.

That includes the outdrives also. :)

Be thinks State Farm is having dinner on you this week!!
That seems a whole lot high.

I just insured ours for $660/yr with aggreed value of the boat at $56,500!!

Progressive is an absolute rip off! They wanted twice that at over $1300.00/yr! I laughed right before I hung up!!!:p

Ooops!! Just saw you were in NY. Everything is expensive in NY! Sorry.....:D

Re: Boat Insurance?

Insurance to me is just part of being a responsible boat, snowmobile, 4wheeler, whatever owner. I have it on everything, all my power sports, trailers, everything. Anything on a trailer especially can be stolen in a couple minutes and so aside from the liability, I just like to sleep well. It especially makes sense on a boat because anyone can hit a submerged object at any time. Progressive was the best deal (cheapest/best coverage) for me and they provide roadside assistance for the trailer which I actually needed once when I learned trailer lugs arent the same size as suv lugs. Nobody seems to come close to Progressive coverage cost for all my toys and trailers. I've never made a claim so I really can't speak to that aspect of the insurance. Progressive homeowners on the other hand is inappropriately expensive compared to everyone else I shopped since they use a separate 2% of the value of the house, wind/hail deductible that other companies haven't started using yet here.

Quite true about Progressive in general, but Not true about insurance in NY in particular. You just gotta shop around.

I have friends in NC, CA, NM, MI, OH and Fl and they all pay more for insurance than me in NY. And to add insult to injury, some of them pay property tax on their toys each year as well.
