So i have a mercruiser alpha 1 4.3. I have trouble starting the boat for the first time every time and sometimes trouble after. I have done the pumping that everyone suggests and it works sometimes. I'm newer to boating and have an issue with this am i wrong to think that if i turn the key the boat should just start, no turning over for a few minutes no throttle pumping. My engine is fuel injected not carb. so i don't understand what the pumping has to do with anything. Frankly i'm probably just being anal and don't like the noise or the feeling of o crap is it going to start this time (has never not started). Just curious i guess as stated i've never been stranded it is just annoying and again with it being fuel injected i don't understand the correlation of the pumping.

No don't pump an FI engine. May have a weak fuel pump or need a filter changed. Will turn over a few seconds.

Pumping it does nothing. There is an enrichment circuit that comes into play on cold starts. If it is an EFI there are sensors that the ecm reads on cold start. The main sensor looked at is the temp sender/coolant temp. If it is faulty, it relays false info and could cause a hard cold start.

What about fuel pressure ? When wife's pump was weak/worn after running out of gas a few times . The fix was to turn key on you could hear pump run the cycle off to build pressure for starting . Would do a couple times and pump wouldn't run meaning enough pressure/primed ? Started better till I changed pump in tank . 4.3 L chevy astro van, boats with ecm can read this pressure .

You also need to have the throttle at idle position for cold starts. If you are raising the throttle above idle, it will be hard to start.
