Hi, I got a 1988 Stratos, that was marketed as "Turn Key", but was more like Dump and run, so I Could turn and SINK.

The Transom had 2 drains. Each that connected to hoses, that connected to Plastic Thru-Hull fittings, that were just stuck into the holes in the hull. SURPRISE. they both leaked water into the boat.

I want to replace them with something that WON'T sink the boat. But, I can't find any through hull fittings that are long enough. The hole is 2" wide, and 2" deap.... so, I would need a Thru-Hull fitting that is threaded longer than 2", and, I can't seem to find it.

Something like this appear to be perfect:

http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/product.do?part=52533&AMAZON

or this, with a sea-**** (Seams to be the preferred method):

http://www.jamestowndistributors.co...29&familyName=Groco+Bronze+Thru-Hull+Fittings

BUT, I can not find any with the 2.5" threaded I would need, since the hole itself is 2" deep.

The season is ending quickly.... Any help would be superbly appreciated. =)

Hi!,

Thanks so much for responding. =) From what I understand, or, at least, have seen on most plastic Thru-Hull connectors, they say NOT FOR USE BELOW WATER LEVEL. So... I figure I need stainless steel, or Bronze... Whether or not I need a seacock is a question as well, as many seem to feel any connection below water should.

Is the plastic OK? That would certainly be cheaper. I'd just need a 2" diameter one, to match my hole.

I've found this:

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|51|106370|316448|367124&id=827272

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|51|106370|316448|315121&id=142200

Perhaps those with a seacock are the way to go? I'd just need to sell an organ.

I also found this, which has a nut... but, it doesn't show the length, diameter, etc:

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|51|106370|316448|367124&id=142492

Which do you (or anyone) feel would be best? Do I need a Seacock? Is the plastic OK? If not.... Do I go for a nut & Seacock, NO seacock, or do I get the seacock that mounts to the transom? (picture with 2 methods I've seen)

This is on the add for the item you posted: "Caution: All plastic thru-hull connectors are designed for installation above the water line only."

Do you feel Plastic is OK, despite this?

OK, after much much much reading.... I find that MARELON is ok for below waterline, but, it says, if below waterlevel, must have a SEACOCK. That would add considerable cost to this repair. Any input? Can I use the kind that clamps to a hose, or do I need a seacock? The Thrull Hull, sits a few inches under the waterline, and, previously, did not have a seacock, just a ball drain.

Also, finding 2" diameter seams to be limited...

Are these "Drains" for Livewells? If so...Are they also not for the purpose of allowing water to flow into the live well and then OUT of the livewell when the boat is on the trailer, or am I thinking wrong about these fittings??

I think that these drains are an effort to produce a self bailing cockpit. The seacocks are for an emergency sitiuation where the hose breaks. Putting them in is a personal thing. For the best in safety you should have them. Thing is, you might never need them if you never have a hose failure. It really is up to you and how secure you feel about it. If you check the hose condition regularly you probably don't need seacocks. Having said that the safest thing is to have them "just in case". Would they be easy to get to if a hose failed? If you can't even get to them with water rushing in what's the point? Make sure you have a high GPM bilge pump and a float switch and don't put them in? Thats what I would do, along with regular inspection/replacement of the hose and clamps.

They are Deck drains...... I attached a pick of one of the drains (there are 2, one in each corner). 1 pic of the drain where the water goes in, and one where it comes out

After much research, I found the EXACT items.

Turns out, there WERE flanged ends, but, both at some point, broke off. Here is the item:

This was the thru-hull
http://www.allinonemarinesports.com/product/perko-cockpit-scupper-57031.htm

This is what is in the boat (1 is missing the ball)
http://www.allinonemarinesports.com/product/perko-cockpit-scupper-57966.htm

Should I just replace the through-hulls with new ones of these, since it's the same as was there? Or is this crapola?

Are you sure the transom drains are below the waterline? Can you take a pic, further away from the stern, of the transom that shows these drain locations?

Here's my 2? worth... The originals lasted 20+ years. I doubt you will own the boat that long. For the price difference, I'd go with the originals and do proper maintenance and I'm sure you'll be happy.

Indeed. I sat there and watched the water coming in, while reaching into the water to try to plug it...

Re: Boat had leaking PLASTIC below water Transom Drains. Can't find proper replacemen

Thing is, I have no clue how long they lasted.... I have only recently acquired this boat, and looks like lot's of neglect, duct tape, etc.... rather than proper care. But, I hear you on what you're saying. From what I can tell, these are plastic and not meant for under the water line... makes me wonder if I should go with a different, similar type. Turns out, they are "SCUPPER VALVES" but, since the flaps are MIA, and the ends were gone, I didn't' realize it till now. So, now I'm looking at Scupper Valves.... Thanks for all the input so far!

I am thinking of going with these... they are a bit more, but reasonable, and they are BRONZE, should be way better than plastic...

I went with Bronze "Scuppers" (turns out that is what was there, but was so broken, I didn't realize it)... So, do I use Marine Silicon, Marine Apoxy, or that Marine Glue I read people using a lot?

I'd use 3M 4200 sealant.

That makes more sense, them being scupper valves. And +1 on the 4200 because you want to be able to maintain it, as opposed to 5200 that's permanent. I like your choices as I think the bronze is a much better idea than plastic, especially if the boat will ever see any saltwater. I've had plenty bronze seacocks over the years that have held up for decades.

It will see 95% Saltwater, which, of course, is nasty aggressive stuff.... So, I gotta be sure I do the right things, since, not only is Saltwater nasty stuff.... It's deeper, rougher, and farther out, than a peaceful lake! I sure don't feel like being out on Sandy Hook, and finding water entering the boat....

OK, so... QUESTION. I've got Bronze Thru-Hulls coming in, new Scupper drains.... (will get new hose shortly)... and, I'm thinking LIFE SEAL for the Bronze Tubes. But..... the holes are bare wood. Is this a problem? I don't see myself filling them and re-drilling. So, short of that. Should I prepare the holes in some way (coat them with something, ets...) before installing the Thru-Hulls with 4200 or Life Seal?
