Illegal to use bluegill for bait here in MO. Sun perch work just a well though and are perfectly legal.

If bluegill are illegal to use for bait where you live, there are almost certainly some shad available nearby, and catfish love them too. All you need is a cast net. I've caught plenty of big catfish on large gizzard shad.

But the bottom line is, big fish like to eat other fish. You might get lucky and occasionally catch a big fish on nightcrawlers or stink bait, but to consistently get into the bigger fish, you need to use for bait what they normally eat - and that's other fish.

Sorry for the late reply, here in California bluegills are the choice bait for big catfish. Especially flatheads. LDJ

Check the regs in the state you are fishing in, as using gamefish for bait in some states is illegal!!

The law for Pa states "Legally taken gamefish may be used as bait"
I never used anything else for catfish but bluegills.One night we were fishing at Raystown and caught 8 lake trout on bluegills,They were all 7-10 lb.I heard of guys using chicken liver baked in sun all day to get good skin on it so they stay on hook.

i would love to fight with a monster cat,, when i was about 10 or 12yrs old a neighbor managed to land one bank fishing with a rod n reel on the mississippi at over 30 lbs that was the largest scale we had around to hook it on... as it awaited slaughter in one of those small like 4ft round kiddy pools i remember thinking it was huge.. i think the local record turned in at the one store that tracks them this year was high 50s or so

living in pa also western side we use blue gills all the time in the allegheny river for monster cats. You have to fish at nite for them. If you want channels we use cut blue gills. Take a 5 in blugill cut in three pieces spray with wd40 the guts usually do the best then the head then the tail. IF you want monster flat heads, use a live blue gill. take a 3 ounce bank sinkler leave a 2 to 3 ft leader 1/0 circle hook hook through tail. Throw out and let the fun begin. But heres a trick if you ever fish in small lakes that have cats in them. Go to the store buy a can of SPAM, yes thats SPAM, do not buy anything but spam. Cut into chunks, half in thick 2in by 2in square use trebel hook. push through center quarter turn pull back but dont go through. Can be used on a egg bobber or on the bottom. Good luck have fun.

I don't think you have flatheads there. The bait of choice for big
blue cats in the potomac river is bluegill, and gizzard shad. My
brother, and I consistantly catch 30 - 40 lb blues on fresh cut
shad. The bigger fish seem to like the heads.
