1984 Chris Craft Scorpion 230, GM5.7 V8:
I am ready to install a Blue Sea 1-2-off-both switch for two batteries, but am not clear about the instructions directing me to "cut the field wire between the alternator and regulator and connect them to the small F1 & F2 terminals on the back of the switch". Which wire is considered the "field" wire?
I think the regulator is inside the alternator. Do they mean the main (only) wire from the alternator?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Re: Blue Sea o-off switch installation

I can't answer your request specifically, but these instructions are to prevent damage to the alternator should you turn the switch to "off" while the motor is running. I didn't connect them on mine when I did my installation in 1990. If I were installing the switch today, I would look at the system advocated by West Marine that lets the system charge both batteries all the time without you having to remember to switch between them. I think it involves separation the house load from the engine load;I can't remember the particulars, but all that information is available on their website. It seemed to eliminate the possibility of causing damage to the alternator, which would make this wiring superfluous. Of course, you can buy the necessary parts anywhere.
