First, How do the controls shift when not hooked up to the motor? Second, Also make sure the shift cable has no kinks in it. Sometimes these cables are longer than they should be and just pushed all up under the splash well. Thirdly, with the cables unhooked from the motor, you should be able to shift the motor by hand, just by sliding the shift rod.

Last question / issue and I should be good to go. New impeller, now I have very poor pressure through the tell tale. Had next to nothing prior too the change. Seems to be clear passage. What am I missing? I get PLENTY of water out of the exhaust on the lower, just not up top..... I know this question is out there everywhere, but many of you have this specific 1976 Mercury 850. Thanks in advance.

Oh and also, my control issue was actually in my MerControl, I swapped with my old control box from my Mariner and works perfect now. Thanks for the previous info on that question, too.

Well I hate to admit it, but the angle of the motor prevented me from seeing the tag. I have located it plain as day. The serial number is 4425271. Which I believe is a 1976. The motor looks in pretty good mechanical shape but the wires are extremely brittle and some are broken. So I need to locate a wiring diagram so I can begin to rewire it all. Thanks for the help.
Hi I was wondering if you could post a photo of where you found it as I have a Mec 850 Blue Band and I am having the same issue. thanks for your help.

Doubt of you will get a photo. Redhot hasn't been around in over 3 years.
