Block repairs

Hi,

I have a Volvo 4.3L. The block where the top starter motor screw should go into has completely come away. I've been told that welding might do it but I'm not so sure.

What is the best way to sort this?

Replace the block; Chevy starters have enough issues without having a cobbled up mounting pad.

It's in at the boatyard but I'll go in and get a Photo.

Is replacing the block extremely expensive?

i replaced the block on an old chevy motor out of a 94 k1500, just to redo the whole thing cost 3K+, just buy a new motor if your really worried about it... i would just have a GOOD welder put her back together and try your best... 100-200 dollar fix, or 2K + imma try the cheap first...

I guess it's all about getting the labor costs down but I will definitely see if welding is possible. Especially with the engine out it makes sense to at least get an expert to have a look.

I got a real bad deal on this one, having bought it, 1 week later I had to get the transom assembly replaced which cost $3500 so I unfortunately have to look at the cheap solution first.

I just replaced a Volvo 7.4 (chevy 454 block) and YES it is VERY EXPENSIVE!!! Through iboats I got a great recommendation and I purchased a US Engines block. Google them and ask for Mike when you call. Great folks, excellent product, reasonable prices with some horsepower upgrade options available too.

FYI? If you try to repair this by welding I hope you are planning to pull the engine. Here?s my suggestion. I had a similar situation with an old tractor some years ago. My neighbor is a machinist. He helped me build a custom fit steel bracket that I bolted to other areas of the block. Then I attached the starter, bolting one of my two starter bolts to the bracket. Don?t have the tractor any more or else I would send you a photo. Just make sure it?s sturdy. Your boat engine/starter probably has more resistance and torque than did my old tractor. Anyway, just an idea? thinking outside the box and cheap!
