Re: Blew the waterpump hose apart on 3.0 Volvo Penta

Any resolution? I also have excessive pressure in my hoses.

Thanks

i had the same issue as 87bayliner, unlike him, i found two large chunks of rubber stuck in the metal elbow that screws into the riser. this clogged water from the impellar pump to the riser, and forced excessive water through the engine causing the hose to burst.

Re: Blew the waterpump hose apart on 3.0 Volvo Penta

I also have the Volvo Penta 3.0GS in my '97 Four Winns. I have blown the large hose between the circulating pump and thermostat housing 4 times during the last 8 years. The Four Winns shop was never able to figure it out and said there shouldn't be any pressure in that hose. The hose is rock hard at high rpm's until the engine reaches 160F, and then it gets a little softer, but still too hard. Eventually it just splits as others have described.

I got frustrated and decided to learn everything I could about how the engine circulates water. I have the OMC/VP manuals and I have taken everything apart multiple times, but there is no blockage. I have a brand new manifold and I have removed the riser 3 times, but it's not blocked.

This weekend I removed the circulating pump and thermostat housing (again) and ran the engine for less than a minute (since it has no water to cool it) to check for pressure coming from the block or head.. there was no puffing of air from either opening.

I am becoming convinced that either A) the seawater pump is just putting too much water in the t-stat housing, or B) there is significant exhaust pressure getting back into the t-stat housing.

The Four Winns dealer installed a restrictor in the seawater inlet line about 8 years ago because they said the "3.0 is getting too much water", but they have since gone out of business so I can't quizz them about this.

I continue to use the boat relatively trouble-free by carrying two spare hoses and a tool kit for peace of mind.

I'll appreciate feedback from anyone else with the same problem.

Re: Blew the waterpump hose apart on 3.0 Volvo Penta

I just started my 2005 Volvo 3 liter up (on muffs) after servicing for summer use. There was an unfamiliar exhaust noise and water coming out of the bottom near the transom. DS in a post above asked "Do you have water coming out the transom shield exhaust reliefs and the prop?" This seems to be the case. I'll work on it again tomorrow. How serious is this, ie. extent of required repairs. At this time of year marine mechanics are up to 4 weeks behind-that equal half my summer.
Any input to prove or disprove problem?

Hoser,
It's normal for exhaust and water to come out near the transom. It's also normal to sound a little wierd when it's out of the water running on muffs.

Thank you HappyCamper, I haven't had I/O for many years and have only had this one serviced at dealer till now (warranty is ended). I suffer the problems of a new born.

I too found a chunk of rubber in the elbow near the thermostat housing. When I took it out the pressure was releived but after running the boat for about 30 minutes, it was building again. Checked the elbow again and it was clear.

Think it would be bad to run the engine with no thermostat?

I work as an everything mechanic, and I rebuild boats on the side. It's the exaust pressure that splits the hoses. Ive been through the split hose deal. I corrected it by taking automotive dealer hoses (chevy, ford, dodge....), the ones with the braided plastic cover over them. like the ones in your car... they are made for the higher pressures. They keep the hoses from expanding to far...and bursting....Haven't blown one in three years! Just slip the cover over the hose that has the bends for your setup. Make sure that the clamps go over the braid as well as the hose. What works even better is fire hose. It's really tough. But It's only good for CERTAIN sizes. It must fit snuggly or its useless.

Hmmmmmm.... hoses burst and the solution is higher strength hoses?.. I would think the solution would be to eliminate the excess pressure in the stock hoses
