Blank CD-R discs?

Are different CD-R drive units disc sensitive? During my recent YouTube Audio recording venture, after switching to a different PC, with a different CD drive, I was trying to use Sony CD-R discs. My TDK drive unit would not recognize it. I tried several different new discs to no avail. I finally grabbed another pack of discs that I had (they were GQ brand) and it worked right off.

So now I am wondering what is with this 100 pack of Sony CD-R discs that I have? Are they bad? Is it my CD-R drive unit? Is it just a compatibility issue. The TDK drive is probably circa 2005, but lightly used. The Sony discs are somewhat newer.

Maybe I should try those Sony discs on my Cheapy Toshiba Laptop CD-DVD drive unit?

I have never had any luck with Sony discs, it is like they are using some type of different reflecting material in them. Also, I have had other discs that have set for a couple of years, that would work when new, but once the seal was broke on the case, they deteriorated.

Yes some drive are sensitive to the brand of disk, so the Sony CD's are most likely good. Before you give up on them you might want to try a different burner program and see if that makes a difference. You will have some people tell you it don't make a difference but I have had several computers that were that way.

Could have just been a bad bunch of discs. The last big stack I bought for $20 - I threw away about 1/3 of the discs, wouldn't work in either burner I had.

Not until they started selling them in bulk anyways. When you paid $5 a piece for them they were always good. When they went to $5 for a couple dozen then you would get bad ones.

I have had problems with virtually ever type of disc storage media they have ever invented. I used to have a lot of problems with Sony 3.5 in discs back in the day.

Will my Sony discs make good frisbees? May I could send them to Obama so he can practice holding and aiming a skeet gun?

Re: Blank CD-R discs?

I used YTD Downloader to copy it to the harddrive. Then YTD has a converter to convert that file to an MP3 file. I tried both Nero and the burn function in Windows Media Player. Neither worked with the Sony CD's. They just kept telling me to insert a blank disc.

My burner is an older but very slightly used 40/12/48x TDK unit. No DVD capability.

First of all get a hold of a copy of imgburn, best burning software there is in the world! and it is free, I gave up on nero, windows and host of others before I found imgburn The URL is The Official ImgBurn Website

It has several different options and you can use it to rip and insert files into an .iso file, it is well worth getting it. and as I said, the price is right.

If the burner is telling you to insert a disc when you've already done so, there's an incompatibility there. I've had this occur, but always corrected it by plugging in another disc - same brand, whatever it was.

You've either got a bad box of discs (unlikely) or a reader/burner that isn't working up to standard.

I may have one of those around somewhere, I'll have to check. I will be getting a new R-RW drive to replace the ROM drive in the computer I usually use. I can try the discs in that new unit.

I threw out 1/3 of a stack of Sony CD-R's because they wouldn't initialize or errored during burning. Never a prob with any other brands. Doubtful it's the burner or the software

Is the disc formatted?

Don't know about that, Outsider. These were not re-writable discs. They were simply new discs right out of an older but near full pack of 100 discs.
