Black Max 200 EFI ticking noise

1993 Merc Black Max 200 efi. "Ticking" noise subtle and most noticeable around idle. With stethoscope, targeted on the "brain" side (starboard) just behind the lowest cylinder. No power loss, 95+ compression all cylinders. Lower unit solid. Checked for exhaust leak, spark jump ... all negative. IMAO (amateur opinion) tick sounds mechanical. Before a power head tear-down, have any thoughts?

last internal "tickin'" noise i had in one turned out ta ba a piston "skirt".. had a micro size crack in tha bottom.... all i got.

Thx. Didn't thing of that one. What was your resolution? Frustrating the tick is bearly noticeable until I went with the stethoscope. Hopefully I'll find the issue before some catastrophic internal event!
