Time for a update on the boat and part of that will include putting a black chrome finish on all of the metal of ss in the boat. I do need these material's however and cant seem to find them...Are these chemicals readily avaible or are they to toxic for sale...Any pointers out there...

Acetic acid

Barium acetate

Chromic acid

Re: Black chrome inquiry

I have seen a product put out by "Dupli-Color", that can make any chromed surface look like anything from black chrome...to color tinted chrome...I think it would be easier than setting up a "Dow Chemical factory" in my house...;)

For the record, I know nothing about this stuff...

All this stuff is way over my head, I just posted it in case you can figure it out...

BTW, the parts you are talking about...are they already Nickle Plated?

From my limited knowledge, if the parts are Stainless Steel...I don't know of anything that can be done "chemically" to change its color...

However, I believe that a Gunsmith Supply House, such as "Brownells" may have something that can "blacken" it...

Just a quick search for those chemicals revealed stuff that sounds like it would land you on a top government "watch list"......JK...who knows you might be able to get this stuff at your local Pharmacy or maybe even E-bay...?

All of the following are excerpts taken directly from "Wikipedia"

Chromic acid: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromic_acid
"was widely used in the instrument repair industry, due to its ability to "brighten" raw brass. A chromic acid dip leaves behind a bright yellow patina on the brass. Due to growing health and environmental concerns, many have discontinued use of this chemical in their repair shops."

Barium acetate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barium_acetate

Acetic acid
: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetic_acid

And these are the MSDS sheets I found...

ACETIC ACID: http://www.sciencelab.com/msds.php?msdsId=9922769

BARIUM ACETATE: http://www.sciencelab.com/msds.php?msdsId=9927089

CHROMIC ACID: http://www.sciencelab.com/msds.php?msdsId=9925764

I would actually be interested to know if you try the method and how it works out...:D

Re: Black chrome inquiry

Dupli coor i am experimenting with it right now. Not to uniform little splotchy spay pattern. I believe you build 3 very light coats for a final finsih...If i can get a solid tint it will work. Back to tinting i am on my 3rd attempt for a first coat this will be intresting.

Cool, post up some pics...I would love to see how it turns out from someone in the real world, not TV...:)

Hmm not what i had in mind...In order to get a uniform shadow it need's to be almost black.. not chrome finsh. Deep gun metal blue is the thought.

Hmmm, very interesting. Esp that last part about a deep gun metal blue. That might have some really interesting effects on boat OB's & the trim. Cool!

Re: Black chrome inquiry

Dont think so. The base is polished SS almost chrome. The paint is translucent so the chrome show's however in thin ghost layers its very splochy and heavy coatings are needed... all but overwhelming the base high polish

Psst it disolves in a gas bath you would need a very strong clear coat to protect it...
