so im just finishing fixing up my boat, and now im ready for carpet. i went to a couple of stores and priced out what we needed and decided on a black outdoor carpet from a local carpet store.

I have had som time time to think about it and now im worried that the carpet might heat up to much in the sun and make our lives miserable. does nyone have black carpet that could tell me what they think of it? i dont want to have to redo it once ive put it in.

also, the carpet that we picked out isnt specific to marine carpet.. its just regular outdoor glu down carpet. is that ok? or do i need a carpet specific for marine use?

any advise will be appreciated

Re: black carpet?

I'm thinking black carpet is going to be unpleasant in the extreme come the dog days of summer. Even royal blue and similar shades can get real hot.

The lighter the better when it comes to the tender tootsies.

Black may get too hot to go barefoot on. I would go with a marine specific carpet designed for that application. I'm sure a carpet sage will give you more specifics - I have never seen black carpet in a boat! Better safe than sorry - good luck.

We have very dark grey and don't notice any extra heat. And it's not marine carpet, just some outdoor from the local H.H. Works good for us and you just take it out, hose it down and it's good to go.

Re: black carpet?

I would say it would depend on the type of boat and how much sun is directly on the carpet. How big the boat is, air flow etc. Reason I say is darker colors soak up the sun, bright colors reflect. So in general darker color, even darker boats will have a higher temperature than a white one.

I would not have black carpet in a boat just as I would not have a black canvas top. I like the looks of black, just not the heat.

The light gray decks in my boat even get warner than the white decks.

Dirt!! You'll be cleaning constantly to get rid of nonblack stuff, if you can stand the heat.

Re: black carpet?

agreed with the above,

but another real issue is the heat. it gets pretty warm back east....and if you burn your feet on the floor you wont want to boat.

carpet is supposed to be there for comfort.....

Fish hooks get stuck in regular carpet.

Generally don't get stuck in marine carpet.

I have really really light green carpet on mine and in the summer you almost have to dip your feet in the livewell to stand on it, black would be unbearable, how about a light grey, still has black in it but you won't be able to bake a pizza on it in July.

Re: black carpet?

We used to have a wine-red color of carpet original to the boat. When we had the floor redone, they went with a light grey carpet and it is significantly hotter on the feet than the old stuff. I have had to splash water on the floor to stand if the spot had been unoccupied/unshaded for any long period of time in the sun. I'd recommend the lightest shade you can find. Black would also look like hell with cottonwood seeds, dirt, and lint/fuzz from clothing and such.

This. Forget the temperature issue, this one will drive you insane. I put navy carpet in my last boat. It looked great when I cleaned it, but the SECOND you stepped into that boat from the ground and it looked trashed again. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/Boat Project/DSCF1927.jpg

I went with marine vinyl in my current boat and I love it. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2504.jpg If I hadn't gone that route, I would have least gone with a light gray or brown carpet for dirt hiding.

Re: black carpet?

Thanks forall the advise.. ill definitely be scrapping the idea of black carpet. I think ill probably go with a shade of gray.

When i first started redoing my floor my girlfriend and i were looking at painting it or puting the marine vinyl on it but alfter do all the fiberglassing on top of the wood i realized that the carpet would be best because my fiberglass work isnt that good (there is quite a few layers and you would probably see where the seems of the cloth) the carpet just seems like it would be forgiving in the mannor.

Do you think you would see the minor problems is i put the vinyl on top though? I just dont want to do all the work and it looks like crap lol

Re: black carpet?

My SeaRay came with gray carpet and it sucks. What I mean is the carpet is too hot to stand on in the summer more than a few seconds. The carpet is a standard gray, not dark and not light gray. My boat is a bow rider and if the bimini top isn't opened you really can't spend much time on the carpet. I like the carpet but had it removed most of the year last season.

I would go for a light gray if you are going gray. It does look good in the boat though.

Re: black carpet?

My last 2 boats came with nice, light colored snap-in carpet that covered almost all of the cockpit. As soon as I bought the boat, I unsnapped the carpet, brought it home and stored it in the garage until I sold, or am ready to sell, the boat. It's fine in the cabin, but I hate having carpet in the cockpit.

Re: black carpet?

I didn't have carpet it the cruisers, just cut out carpet for the Silverton. Hated not having it in the other boat. It's dark grey but have had no hot days to test it out yet.

Re: black carpet?

^^^^^^ Hahaaa. We need the thick pile carpet in Canada so we don't dull the blades of our ice skates when we get in the boat
