Bizarre starter behavior (won't "bench test" on motor)

I ran into this once and ended up taking the new starter apart. I found a cracked magnet.

Make sure the mounting surface is rust free, and the grounds at the back of the block are clean. Just looking at them dosent count, remove and clean them.
