Bizarre problem with my remote control

I'm having the most bizarre issue with the remote control unit on my boat. Boat is a 1995 Stratos/90hp Johnson, remote is BRP concealed mount remote control. I broke the neutral lockout rod (0126133 from the parts diagram at the link) a few weeks ago, and installed a new one Monday night. Other then the broken rod, I've never had any issues with the remote control.

When I depress the new neutral lockout rod and press in the neutral warm up knob, I can move the throttle anywhere from full forward to full reverse with no issues, exactly the way its supposed to be. When I depress the neutral lockout rod and move the throttle forward, I get "a little" resistance. When I depress the neutral lockout rod and move the throttle into reverse, I get "A LOT" of resistance, so much so that I have to really force the throttle to go past about 110degrees (assuming neutral is 90, full forward is 0, and full reverse is 180).

I've checked for binding on the wires, and can't find anything. I cannot understand why it would transverse the full range when pressing the neutral warm up knob, but then not move at all when I try to put it into gear.

Anyone have any thoughts on what could be the problem? I'm completely stumped.

Thanks for the response. I've just spent the last two hours tearing it apart to try and fix this, and I'm totally stumped. ARGH this is frustrating.
