howdy all - i just picked up a 1992 bayliner capri 18', with i/o 4.3L.....boat is next to new still, and i have the original bimini top with it. question is, over the engine and down behind the back two corner seats is a completly open area. just in front of the rear 'deck' area, is a padded-on-top section about 10" 'long' and the width of the boat. it is hinged at the rearward edge, has snap-straps that hold it down on the front edge, and can flip upward and open.....is this to store the bimini top in? the top fits perfect in there, the 'u' shape of the bimini top fits perfectly over the engine area, and then on each side behind the rear seats it is open right down the the floor, so again the bimini top and frame when collapsed fits right down in there just so perfectly....it fits so good i wouldn't even question it other that the heat of the engine makes me wonder. the top comes nowhere near touching the engine, or the belts on the front or any moving parts or anything, but is that heat in that compartment good for the top? i really love this boat so far, if that spot is made for the bimini then i'd have to say this really is the coolest and best well-thought-out boat i've ever seen in my life.... i've googled it and read all over this forum and can't get an answer.... anybody have a boat like or similar to this one? i can get pics if anybody would like to see this setup. thanks to all and/or anybody with a little advice or direction on this.

My boat has a sundeck and engine hatch rather then a doghouse w/ jump seats like it sounds like yours has, but the bimini top stores in a similar manner to what you're describing:

many boats store the bimini or convertible tops above the engine in the rear. will the heat from the engine degrade the material - yes. however no faster than sitting in the sun.

Yes, if it fits it belongs, lots of I/O boats have storage like that. Some boats have that setup to stow a full top also. There is not enough heat in there to hurt anything, remember the exhaust has a water jacket and the engine has a 140 degree thermostat.

+1...yep, that where it goes. Take the time to put the boot on the top for longer storage and you'll drastically reduce the risk of damage (mostly from water and dirt, not heat).

The material's number one enemies are UV rays and wind.

My 96 SeaRay 175 five series has the exact same set up your describing and my bimini fits snuggly in the so called open area when stoed neatly pretty good use of space.
