My 22' Chris Craft came with a bilge pump with the separate float switch setup, but it does not work and needs replacing. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to have the automatic switch built in to the bilge pump or to use the separate float switch setup?

Re: bilge pump type question

I like the all-in-one pumps simply because they take less space and are easy to install. I have used the Attwood brand in two different boats and I love it. Runs about $50.

I would go with the auto, especially if you leave the boat in the water for extended periods of time.

Re: bilge pump type question

the advantage of the built in switch is the stuff in the bilge doesn't get under the switch. i've had trouble of leaves, etc getting under the separate switch while the pump is pumping, thus not turning off the pump, results dead battery, burnt up pump.
