Bilge pump nightmare

I've worked in dive shops for the last 20 years and have regularly changed bilge pumps on dive boats over the years without any issues 'till today. I have a problem I seem unable to solve and its driving me crazy. Perhaps I can't see the wood for the trees, whatever I hope someone here can figure this out.
I have just replaced two bilge pumps, two float switches and two on/auto/off fused panel switches and all the wiring in between. I have wired things the same way I always have which also happens to be exactly as described in the wiring diagrams supplied with the goods.
Both systems are independant of each other except for taking the grounds off of a common ground bar.

The problem:-

1) with both switches off I have no lights and no pump operation when the float switches are lifted. All is as it should be.

2) with both switches in the auto position and float switches down, the light on the port switch is ON suggesting that the pump is pumping even though it isn't. If the port float switch is lifted the pump works and the light goes out. When the starboard float switch is lifted the pump works and both lights are on.

3) Port switch on manual, light on no pumping.
Starboard switch on manual, light on and pumping.

4) When the port switch is off the stb auto isn't working.

5) If stb is on auto, the port light is on regardless of its switch position .

Now it would seem that somewhere the two circuits are interconnected but I don't see how as I have just run totally new wiring and as far as I can see the only common factor is the grounding bar.

Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.

TIA

Paul

Re: Bilge pump nightmare

If you have switches with indicator lights in them, those switches typically have a separate ground terminal for the lamp. I suspect you have those wired wrong -- perhaps on the +12V bus instead of the Ground bus.

I suggest you take one out of the equation and then the other. Test and ensure proper operation of each one
independently before hooking both up. Could be something is defective and you did everything right!

I agree to remove one altogether and get one going properly, and then add the other one. I am sure while adding the other one you will find out what you did wrong. If anything, the wiring may have been cracked or the insulation poorna dn the voltage leaked across to the other bilge pump. Good luck anyways.
