When I put in the new transome what is the best way to replace the bilge drain hole?

What metal piece do I need to line the new hole with?

you can buy a garboard drain anywhere.

after you buy the garboard drain, (you need to know the size) take a big honkin drill bit (the size of the drain sleeve) and go for it.

then take resin to the hole.....(just ket the wood soak it up for a little while) and pop in the new one.......seal with 5200.

you can also use 5200 instead of the resin

Are you talking transom drain hole or garboard drain?

My dad used to flare tubing using two ball-peen hammers.

My dad used to flare tubing using two ball-peen hammers.

I just did that myself after reading it on this forum. I used a medium sized ball-peen placed on the end of the tube, tapped it with a larger one to start it, then switched to the larger one to flair it more, tapping it with the medium sized one, then tapped the edges down with the flat side of the hammer. I put the pre-flared end on the inside and blocked it in tightly so it stayed put while I tapped on the outside. Worked pretty good... I used 5200 to bed the tube in, then used acetone to clean it all up once I was finished.

i personally like the PVC type with the sealing washers, and nut on the inside. i know it is tight, and no leakage around the tube.

thanks for the hammer idea that should work. the treaded type will not work on the splash pan drain because it's almost level with the bottom of the pan

You could always borrow the flaring tool. :)

transome hole

Use a drain tube. They come in short and long lengths. Drill the hole, cut the drain tube about 1/8" too long (to hold a bead of caulk) and rough sand the exterior to help grab the caulk. Slather the hole and then the outside of the tube with 5200 and slide it in. Peening is optional when using 5200 but make sure there is a good bead around both ends.

Just for clarity, a transom drain tube is different from a garboard drain. Garboard drains are flanged, use bolts for installation and have a theaded pipe plug for opening/closing. Cost is about 4X more than transom drain tubes. They are typically placed in the center of the hull at the lowest point and kept open during dry storage to keep water from collecting deep in the bilge.

I have a 1960 18ft fiberglass cuddy which is completely open behind the rear seat. There is a full transom width 8" 'shelf' about 8" from top with the brass drain tube flared on both sides. I call this the splash well drain. The rest of the area behind the seat is open down to the floor where the battery sits and has another drain tube with both ends flared. I call this the transom drain. About 5" below that there is what I call the bilge drain that should take the plug. Outside access only....can't get to it from inside. Now this 'bilge' hole is only 3/8" (looks threaded) and 1/4" from the bottom so no flanged fittings will work here. Has anyone ever seen this or have any thoughts on replacing the 'bilge' drain? Thanks, Steve

The bilge hole on my boat looks like this. It is is at the bottom of the transom.

I have a 14 footer, a Glastron outboard V-145.
