Re: Biggest outboard ever put on a canoe

I understand now....wow. I could have a blast around here, it would be like my moped passing a Harley. I can see myself passing a big sportfish....blowing the horn......"get outta my way"
would be a blast wouldnt it?seriously though the averge joe hears the word canoe and thinks of those little tin sportspals!they have no clue that there are also the big boys out there, because their rarely seen other than up in the far north of canada or alaska.

Re: Biggest outboard ever put on a canoe

I have a really big canoe. It's 23 feet long. A couple days ago I stumbled across a 35 hp Evinrude really cheap. I can't stop myself.

Any advice?

Yes. If it is a cousin of the Hudson Bay Co. freighters, 35 HP is probably a bit conservative.:D;)
I've been in one with 3000 # of freight and a 50 HP Merc. on the Churchill River in Northern Manitoba
Solid as a rock and smooth as silk.

Enjoy!

I have a 17 ft square stern canoe and a 1-1/2 hp Johnson that makes it cruise along at a quick pace. That's with me (325 lbs.) and my son (about 175 lbs.) and all our fishin gear. I'm thinking the results of this experiment could end up in the "craziest thing you ever did" thread. :D

I'm curious, with enough power, does a canoe "plane out"?

enouh power and just about anything will plane. saw footage on youtube of a dining room table woth an outboard planing. just flip it upside down drop the motor on it.... didnt show it cornering though

I can see it already, a thread on how to install trim tabs on a canoe with a 200 hp motor on it!

As has been well demonstrated here, there are canoes and there are canoes.

Post a pic of yours and you'll probably get pretty good advice.

Re: Biggest outboard ever put on a canoe

One of my buds put a 25hp on a row boat 14ft i believe, that was rated for a 15 hp max. Gave er' a twist and went air borne!! YEE HA !!!

When I was a kid in the 60s the biggest outboards you saw anywhere were 115 mercurys and they were rare. 90% of even the ski boats were comming out with less than 75hp. Anyway a guy on our lake had a 14 foot boat that he dropped an engine out of a 57 Thunderbird in. That sucker was scary fast.

Re: Biggest outboard ever put on a canoe

A friend of my son's put a 140hp (I think) motorcycle engine in a 12 footer. Said he was afraid to go over about 70mph.

Wayne

P.S. He's still alive too.

I have seen a youtube video where a guy converted a 12ft aluminum boat to a jet drive with a jetski motor in it. The thing was FAST!
