Re: Big twin 30

Thanks again guys.I took it out for about 4 hours today. It ran well, and the boat didn't take on much,if any water. The only pproblem was that it wont idle.It has the large and small adjustment knobs on the engine cover, but according to the instruction sticker, you finetune with the small knob, once at idle.I can't stay at idle without throttle play,so I had no luck.
Can anyone point me towards an online owners manual,or a place to order a paper one? Thanks,Bobby.
ps,you guys weren't kidding about it being thirsty.:D

Adjust the high speed knob to optimum when running WOT, THEN adjust the slow speed to best idle. Lean it out (clockwise,) until you get a sneeze, then turn it back counterclockwise about 1/8 turn until the lean sneeze stops. BTW, if you need any parts, send me a PM.

All boats/motors are thirsty. Try a 24ft larson with a 5.7litre inboard, 2x10km trips and 3 days @ 20 minutes tubing=$160

We don't boat for fuel economy that's for sure.

Yeah,I know,I'm partners in a Bertram 25,with twin merc 200 offshores.Talk about thirsty.In my (very limited)experience with smaller boats,and outboards,this thing's a pig.:D

I tried exactly that,with no joy.I'm guessing I need to make a carb adjustment,or something.Thanks for the replies.:D

Re: Big twin 30

darn, I just read this thread. I wish I'd seen it sooner because I love the pics. just for kicks----you have a '57 tiller handle/grip on that '56. Don't lose it or break it because those tiller handles are hard to find. That is a really nice motor. I agree they like the petrol, but as said, all motors are thirsty to some extent!:) I totally agree with Tim McCalavy about the dirty idle circuit. Time to clean that carb. I seriously doubt you're going to find a starter/bracket on ebay for it but if you do, buy it if it's below 150 bucks and you want to keep the motor. I also agree that you need a stout arm to crank that rascal. OMC must have thought they were hard to pull, too, and put a compression release on the '57 and later 35hp's to aid in starting with the pull starter.
That's a nice looking rig you have.
Enjoy it,
JBJ
