Um .. no I dont buy into the super charged cook your steak thing :) ..

I can grill at home with a Broiler or cook when camping with Cast Iron.

I dont understand the new fangle dangle things that some of us buy now a days. Its called "Cooking with Heat". :)

Some of the best steaks ( aside from being from a good cut of beef ) are pounded and mashed up with a 16.lb hammer and a few dozen stabbs with a fork.

Your choice on How you want to cook them . but its still Heat.

James Beard comes to mind ;)

Re: Big Green Egg

I have eaten the result of the egg, smoked meats are very good, slow cooking awesome too, and just good ole charcoal grilling is very good too. If you're a BBQ kind of guy, the egg will be one of your best friends. They will last longer than any gas grill too, but I agree they are a bit pricey.

There are countless things you can do with the BGE. Ain't nothing newfangled about it...it's just a well designed smoker/grill. Worth the money? Depends on how often you think you'll use it.

I got a weber smokey mountain that I use for pulled pork, turkey, beer can chicken, wings and the like, and it works great for me, costs a lot less than a BGE too.

Taste the meat not the heat. lol I have 2 duel bbqs that are twins, they are char grillers, and have the smoker on the one at the lake. Love them both. I also have an electric smoker that does a better job than the smoker grill but is all ok. Never had the egg but name makes me think of a smart car pulling a 28 ft Baha.

That was funny :D ..

Im sure its a good product .. but is it needed ?

Its up to you.

I like my Mobile grill for camping trips ( my cast Iron ) ( Seer ).

Backyard cookers are one of two things .. coal or gas. Both yield good results.

Its in the prep though.

I've seen TV advertisings for the BGE, but never eaten anything cooked on one. But I have noticed that the hungrier you are the better anything taste however it is cooked. Example; When my two boys and I were hunting years ago, we always cooked burgers and such at lunch time with a simple Coleman Stove. And while the burgers were mere simple hamburgers prepared into patties before we took out, they were the absolute best tasting burgers we had ever had... And that comes from my two sons too... So some times it is not the cooking stove, grill or even an egg (big and green at that too) but the unique places you prepare the food and how hungry you are...

Lowe's will have 2 20 lb bag of kingsford for $10 on the 4th to the 8th

Dump the Kingsford (or any other brand charcoal) immediately!!!!!!!

Go with this instead (or any other NATURAL hard wood charcoal). Believe me, it makes ALL the difference in the world.

Home

Seriously, I can't stress this enough, makes a huge difference in the flavor of the food. And don't use charcoal lighter fluid either.

agreed 10000000%. On long smokes, the kingsford DEFINITELY introduces a burnt/fire taste to the meat that is just not that pleasant. Natural wood charcoal or lump charcoal only. Cooks SO MUCH CLEANER and better for taste.

Re: Big Green Egg

I have a Kingsford charcoal grill with a side vent and an adjustable grate.. I indirect smoke roasts with it all the time, and they always taste great. I'm sure the BGE could keep an even temp easier as it is ceramic lined, but My Kingsford was about 1/3rd the cost... I also have a Brinkmann Smoke and Grill which the temp can swing from 0*-325* in a matter of minutes, and keeping good charcoal in it and the ashes scooped out and filling the water bath all the time is a chore. I've never gotten anything right on it. emptying the ash pan is the biggest problem as the coal grate sits on top, and there is not much space between the bottom of the pan and grate.

Re: Big Green Egg

Fill the water pan with sand and cover that with aluminum foil. That will help keep the temperature even, but those inexpensive smokers aren't insulated well so keeping temp consistent is difficult at best.

How absolutely true that is! This has nothing to do with cooking but I few years back I was on a 20 mile day hike with the Boy Scouts. Come lunch time I was famished. I had brought an MRE for lunch, At the last I was still hungry and gobbled down the included Apple Sauce with great relish. I have always hated apple sauce and would practically gag if I ever tried to eat it. That day it was soooooo good and slid right down like a good malt!

I have it's distant cousin-Kamado Joe. K-J was stated by several of the founders of Big Green Egg.

It's worth it, in my opinion. It's a bit of trouble to get it going and heated up. I don't use it unless I'm doing something special.

It make TERIFFIC pizza. Great smoked fish and you can really do justice to a brisket.
