Jasper, if compression is good, don't let spark scare you off. It probably WON'T have good spark....I rarely get one that does. But it's easy and fairly inexpensive to fix (probably about 90bucks for a whole new ignition system). The only problem you should have on parts is the cosmetic stuff. There are many places to get parts. You should also check out aomci.org "askamember" section. Those guys know where all the good parts are!
I buy a lot from laingsoutboards.

Re: bidding on '65 Evinrude 35hp

Hi, Lindy.
I was wondering if you could share some of the
challenges you faced during your restore?
Did you have any trouble with anything in particular? Finding parts?
I see iboats has the usual impeller, carb kits, gearcase seals, etc...
Also, does this model/year require a 2 hose pressurized tank? How can I tell?
No tank came with it. FYI. model# 35514.

One thing for sure, this thing is a beast. Hard to move around being so heavy and all. I don't have a lift or anything, just sweat and muscle.

I may give it a shot if the compression/spark is good.

Thanks.

The late 1958 motors had a thermostat and fuel pump. These used a standard single line evinrude/johnson tank. The fuel pump is on the starboard side of the engine (see attached photo). If yours doesn't have a fuel pump, you will need a 2-line pressurized tank. I was lucky with this motor - coils were good, and I just re-gapped the points to 020". Lower unit oil was clear and seals were good. I did remove, clean and install a new carb kit. I got the kit from NAPA but Johnny-Rude dealers also have them, if you need the float. If you need lower unit seals, the kits are available, but you will need a seal puller to remove the old ones, and a pressure tester to check if everything is OK once the new seals are installed.

It does look good but I'm also not a Lark fan. I much prefer the Johnson looks in almost all years .

Well, a guy could always hunt up an RDS-20 cowling for the 'rude, repaint it, and have a decent looking outboard. I love the 58 RDS-20. One of the prettiest models ever for the Big Twin.

I think my 28hp foot may actually fit this one, but I don't want to buy a parts manual to verify though.

It will. They are the same gearcase assembly p/n 593519.

I think some double checking would be good - I'm pretty sure that the gearcases are not interchangeable. The 28hp is the single tube water pump, while the Superquiet motors are all double tube water pumps. I think the Superquiet gearbox is also a different shape (more oval) at the upper mating surface.

Someone go find F_R ... he'll know!

I'm just going by the 1973 Evinrude Common Parts Manual which says the gearcase assembly (lower unit) is the same. Jay are you talking about the later 1960's motors or the 1958 35 hp Lark. The poster has a 1958 Lark.

The '58 Lark has the reirculating, thermostat-controlled cooling system. The 28 does not. The lower units are absolutely NOT interchangeable. But the '58 Big Twin 35 probably is interchangeable with the 28.

Moral of the story is, there were two different 35hp motors in 1958, the Big Twins and the Larks. Be aware of that fact when looking for parts and realize that they are very different motors.

Fair enough. My Evinrude manual specifically states the 1958 Lark and 28 hp gearcase are interchangeable. Sorry for the bum info, but it seemed to come from a good source.

No big deal. Given the number of years, models, etc. of OMC motors, this sort of thing gets complicated. The good news is that there are enough of us who spend waaaaaaaaaay too much time on this site, that we back each other up. Trust me, next time around, it will be you picking up on something that I goofed about.

BTW, there is a 1957 Lark which is the single tube setup. The gearbox on that motor probably is compatible with the 28hp and 33hp motors. They are also really nice looking motors!

True enough, Jay. I do like the early Larks best.

Yep, that's a beauty and the leg looks similar to my 28hp.
