bidding on '65 Evinrude 35hp

Seller says motor is in working condition, but
has a small crack in lower unit.
Long shaft, electric start, tiller handle
and comes with remote control and cables.

I was hoping to find another 1960s 33-35hp project motor,
but didn't want a cracked lower though.

Anyway, he was asking $180, but
I can have it for $125.

What do you think?

figure out what a donor lower unit is going to cost you. he is asking close to runnable motor price.

yea, I'm starting to have second thoughts about the price.
My '62 28hp was only $50.

The only plus side to this deal is the electric starter and some
other parts may be compatible to my 28hp.
Not sure if my 28 lower will work on this 35?

Too much for a 1965 33 hp IMO. I see lots of 28-40 hp motors of that era for sale for $200. That seems to be the magic number here running or not. However, they usually don't sell. People expect too much.

Jasper, your thread title says 1965 35hp. There ain't no such animal. Could be a 33 or 40. Or some other year.

$125 seems reasonable if it is in decent shape. The cracked lower unit changes that. Don't pay more than it is worth for parts, just in case.

Yea, he told me it's '65 35hp.
I'm still waiting to hear back from him on the model number.
After thinking on it for a while, it does sound too much.
I'm not locked-in, so I can still walk away.

Well, it turns out to be a 1958 35hp Lark.
Got it for $85.
It looks a little dirty and not sure
about the state of the motor.
The crack is in the lower skeg.
Also, it came with an after market controller.

I figured I wouldn't try to fix it, but use the
starter on my '62 28hp.
If the starter works I would be happy,
and there may be a few other interchangeable parts.
Or maybe just sell it as a parts motor.

Boy those weren't very attractive engines back then... The '58 Johnson 35hp is a much better looking engine

if it had compression, I'd probably also have bought it for $85. I believe many of the parts are the same as your 28.

Actually, that motor would be worth alot more to some people because it is the first year of the "Superquiet" Evinrude Larks.

Some of the parts will fit on your Johnson 28hp and some won't. If I had found the motor, however, I think I would be thinking more in line with a plan to buy parts off of other motors to get this one going!

I see another thread going on this model. I wish they live nearby, LOL!
I will probably check compression/spark just so the next guy knows what he's getting.

I think my 28hp foot may actually fit this one, but I don't want to buy a parts manual to verify though.
Anyway, it can sit in my garage awhile until I decide what to do with it.

It will. They are the same gearcase assembly p/n 593519.

Fix the Lark. It has more value than your 28 hp. Most parts should fit.

Nice job on the Lark, Lindy. Can't bring myself to say its beautiful, but it sure does look as good as new. Larks just aren't my thing. That's just me. Some folks love 'em.

Here's my 58 Lark - not bad looking when it's re-painted!

It does look good but I'm also not a Lark fan. I much prefer the Johnson looks in almost all years .

Yeah Lindy, that lark looks sweet. I'm still waiting for warmer weather to repaint my 56 Lark and take it for a test run with the LU extended.

Actually, I have a 57 Lark on the pontoon - it runs great, was gone through and repainted also, and looks as good as the 58!

Yeah, the 58 and 59 Larks are pretty boxy looking - I prefer the 56 and 57 design with the more rounded cowl. Definitely a more classic look. But I hate removing those clamshell cowls. IMHO the one piece cowls were an improvement as far as putting on and taking off. In any case, you sure can't beat the reliability of those old motors - I think my Larks will run for another 50 years with proper care. Longer than I'll be around

Hi, Lindy.
I was wondering if you could share some of the
challenges you faced during your restore?
Did you have any trouble with anything in particular? Finding parts?
I see iboats has the usual impeller, carb kits, gearcase seals, etc...
Also, does this model/year require a 2 hose pressurized tank? How can I tell?
No tank came with it. FYI. model# 35514.

One thing for sure, this thing is a beast. Hard to move around being so heavy and all. I don't have a lift or anything, just sweat and muscle.

I may give it a shot if the compression/spark is good.
