Alternator is working as you get a glow in the oil warning light when you pull the starter cord. Checked the kill switch and that's working OK. Tried to check the ignition coil but I don't know how it works as there only seems to be one low tension wire. The high tension leads seem to be sealed into the coil so I can't check the resistance of the ht side of the coil. Resistance measured between the single terminal and the engine casing was 0.9 ohms, which seems low to me  I could not see where the magnetic ignition sensor lives so could not check that. Is there any information available online for these engines?

Re: BF8 Not Sparking

Apparently the fault was not with the ignition but a fuel connection. It seems that these Hondas produce such a feeble spark that you can only see it in almost complete darkness. I was using the old technique of taking a plug out, putting the plug cap back on and holding it against an unpainted bit of engine while pulling the starter cord. I do have a spark checker which plugs on between plug and cap but it is for 14mm plugs so would not fit the Honda.
