It's hard to believe, but yes I have hooked myself before and was able to get the barb free with some careful self-surgery. My youngest son literally buried a #5 Blue Fox while "fly-fishing" once, and I have known/seen numerous other fisher-folk with hardware impaled in various areas of their body.<br /><br />I read in another post someone said something about not having a wire to remove a hook. I have also seen somewhere a boating first-aid kit that mentioned a wire loop (?) for removing hooks in the method used in hospitals.<br /><br />Can anyone explain this procedure to me? I am sure that the situation will present itself once again and I would like to have this info up my sleeve so to speak!

Re: Best Way to Remove a Hook From Your Person?

we do have a nurse here somewhere, so maybe they can go over this, but as far as i understand, you would want a fine wire loop to slip behind the barb and pull it out-fwd, as it went in. this would be done after cutting the shank/eye end. this is for a situation where the hook has gone thru/deep enough to warrant continuing to push it back up in circular fashion to the surface, or straight thru the surface. i think it is wise to always have pliers with a cutting edge strong enough to cut any size hook shanks onboard. and better to have them on your person, or within close reach. i just last night talked to a guide who had a large striped bass (20lb) that thrashed and buried a hook in his finger. he had to wait for the fish to take pause, lay it on deck, put his knee on it, and thankfully reach to grab his cutters and cut the hook... <br />-and i'm having to bite a pencil as i write this, as the thought of his other story about having the pliers on your person is even more convincing: his friend recently sat down to blast off in the bassrocket, and realized he'd sat upon a model A bomber lure! and he couldn't have freed himself if not for the pliers in his clipring - the lure was connected to both the seat and his testicles !!!

OOOOHHHH!!! GolDANG that makes me cringe!!<br /><br />I like Ebbtide's advice. Been there. Hurts like the devil to push it through, but that may be your only option. I once fished half a day with the barb and bend of a hook buried in the heel of my palm.<br /><br />Since I am a wuss when it comes to hurting myself, I now carry a small bottle of Anbesol (over the counter Benzocaine, supposedly for toothache) and a few Q-tips in my tacklebox. Haven't needed it myself, but it worked on one of my grandsons to allow me to wrench a hook out of his butt.<br /> :)

Snagged my Grandad in his bald head once with a 3" Rapala. Both trebles. Had to get off the water and to the hospital. Wasn't very popular that day. The Doc didn't charge him to remove the lure, but after it was out he pulled out a 3'X3' cork board and mounted that sucker up there with about 50 other lures he had removed from other people's anatomies.

he said his bud was a very large individual, and must've plopped down pretty hard, to bury the hooks! i guess the scary part is when you realize you're sittin on somethin, and jump up full bore!!! yeeeeeeeoww :D <br />with the new/improved hooks of today, i guess i get at least finger hooked to some degree every outing. only had to cut one out once maybe, but back in the swampfishing days, when getting lures hung up in wood quite often, yanking those lures out (14,17,20#line), i got smacked several times. and they'd come at you mach3.

YEAH, NU , i know the procejure you want but it's impossible to write to words . i saw FISH FISHBURN, one time on his fishin' show .. he IS hands down the most flat- out funniest/ silliest sob i ever seen.. he's a NUT !! he took a treble hook lure an willfully sunk it in his hand to demminstrate how to remove it.. i wish i saw the show again cause i was to busy rollin' on the floor laughin' .. I FELL OUT !! you take a loop of fishin' line ( i have one already made up just in case) loop the loop over the hook than loop the loop over somthing hard mounted like a boat cleat .. what it essentialily is ,is like you have a loop of string ,stick both thumbs inside the circle an pull apart ( opposing pressure ) tite.. so far seems like an said alotta words to explain sometin' so simple.. so don't read complication into it.. so now with one end of loop around the hook ( an it will be naturally at the hook & skin junction.. the other end/ side of the same loop ( or you mite want to think HOOP INSTEAD OF LOOP ) is around an anchor point like a boat cleat... an pull back to cause painful pressure .. in doing this the shank of the hook is raise off your skin , say at a 20 % angle... press down on the E Y E of the hook,,,,, & BINGO out comes the hook .. try it on an orange ... it's a good sub for skin ... WHEWWW !! I'M TRIED & PECKIN' FINGERS KLLIN' ME .. hope you can make sense of it ... good luck... p.s. if it's a treble lure cut hook from lure the snip off the other 2 hooks to make a single hook...

Ebbtide - the last part of your story brought tears to my eyes  :( - I hope he had a big bottle of rum (or similar) on board before it came to extracting the hook!<br /><br />I always encourage the wearing of sunglasses when fishing. Not only for eye protection from the sun - if you get my meaning. That's two more places you don't want a fish hook...

I have to learn this technique. I'm sure it will come in handy with my 12 year old brother, the king of hooking everything but fish. In one outing he hooked me, a friend of mine and himself(3 times). He needs alot of work on his casting. It's going to be a long summer with him. I just can't wait to get him back out there.

Re: Best Way to Remove a Hook From Your Person?

Crab Bait - thanks for that very useful tip. So the loop provides a pivot point for the hook and the hook is naturally forced in a direction that enables the barb to be free from the flesh for removal... I think I understand - very clever (wish I could've seen the fishing show demo :D ).<br /><br />Therefore, your fishing kit should include; Fish hook remover/cutter (long nose pliers), loop of line, Benzocaine, sunglasses, sharp knife and bottle of rum...(Arrrghhh...)

yes kiwi .. you push stra8 down on the E Y E of the hook so the hook will be press against your skin .. supposeably,, it won't get that far ,, an the hook comes flyin' rite out the same hole it went into also,, supposeably,, it doesn't hurt afterwards as if it never happend.. also to add :: i like J B'S benzocane good idea.. i carry on board,, a couple chemical ice bags i got at a drug store for cheap in the first aid section .. you crush up the bags guts an it gets ice cold.. good to have on board .. thanks KIWI .. THAT WAS HARD TO WRITE

Re: Best Way to Remove a Hook From Your Person?

I have been hooked more times than I care to remember. I have had to push a hook back through the skin and cut it off then back it out. I finally learned to remove the barbs on the hooks. I can't tell any difference in lost fish but I sure can when removing hooks from myself. I still get hooked all the time though.<br /><br />Keep plenty of bandages and anti-bacterial medicine around. A cell phone is good to have too if it is in range of a tower. If this is not possible, do like I used to have to do when fishing with my grandpa - tough it out and wait till you get home, then grandma would give me a mercurochrome(???) shower; you know - the red medicine that makes you scream bloody murder.   :( :)

DaleT: just think of it as this: when your bro gets better than you, you can bask in his sunshine, knowing he'll get you on the fish.<br />crab & 62: that's what we really need to know. it basically pulls the hook up to the surface, and holds tension on it til you pop it, letting it come back out thru the hole. **not that i'd be conscious for that part**<br />russ: i've been reading up on tourneys with barbless hooks (bass fishin) and i'm seriously considering doing that from now on. accdg to fishery scientists, it does not increase a loss in landed fish. and it would fer sure make a diff in gettin a hook out of your finger.<br />(note) the trophy trout streams in N.GA require barbless hooks already.

er, uh, JB - i'm right there with you on operating on myself. i'd rather have a person use a razor blade on me than do it myself. i forget anything over 12hrs, but i remember having to use the razorblade on cutting out a hook from my mother's finger just last year. it was very hard to do, to say in the least.

crab baits way of getting the hook out does work.i had to use it twice. once in the bush, and one night wiper fishing. Practice on a orange. Ram the hook in the orange an pull it out the way crab bait discribed. It can save a fishing trip.

Re: Best Way to Remove a Hook From Your Person?

ebbtide<br /> That guy you mentioned, I can't even begin to think how bad that must have hurt. whats worse is i can't think of this man with his pants down , testicals hangin out with too string loops tied to an achor cleat on a rockin boat. it makes me ghost white just thinking about it. the fishin buddy that comes at my nuts with a knife, and two strings had better have the US navy there to back him up cause the chances of him getting past kung fu distance are slim and nun and slim just started swimming for shore. but i do want to say that i will remember that for my non fish hookups. sounds like it would work pretty good. i think that i am going to have to look at the no barb hooks. not only would they be easy to get out of my rump ( a target that gets larger every day) but they must do so much less damage to the fish. now i just have to get over this thought of wearing a sports cup fishing.<br /> thanks derwood.<br /> P.S. that must have been one SLOW ride back to the docks. :D

Re: Best Way to Remove a Hook From Your Person?

crab bait<br /> i got the point about the one loop i was refering to the muti hooked plug and the word testicals with an s at the end. the man must have a great big pair to be putting a pair of shank cutters anywhere near um. i suppose that a man must do what he's got to do. i guess if i had to i would.... na, they would have to call the coast guard in and dart me from a hecolopter like a rabid water buffalo. most likely though they would find me adrift passed out or dead from shock wuss that i am. with my luck they would be the only coast gaurd crew in the world with a cam corder and it would make the weekly round at funnyest home videos. i'd probly win though. that story says alot for catch and release.( please release...) :D

Just yesterday I ordered an emergency hook remover kit from Cabela's. Say's it's the same used in emergency rooms.<br />Page 31, order#AC-11-0392, $6.99, in the '02 Spring catalog.<br />Hope I never need it.
