Would a can of auto Gunk cleaner be too harsh. i need to get a good wire brush all through these cavities and down behind the prop area. It is a pretty heavy build up on a 2003 motor. Probally never been done but not sure it affects the performace at all but also might hide some possible wear and tear?

A picture would help. This must be a serious buildup for you to be concerned about it. If you did get it out, it would just return, especially if you run in the Northern climates where getting the engine warmed up sometimes doesn't really happen.

Bristle brush, sorta bottle cleaner, NOT steel, HOT water and mixed in a very strong solution of powdered dishwasher detergent, that stuff has a lot of lye in it and will cut thru dried egg yolk, sure to desolve (spelling?) even tough carbon and greasy oil accumulations.

Since its a 25hp and likely does a lot of trolling ,switch to a synthetic blend oil and run some Quickleen in your fuel to keep deposits down . The previous owner may have been over mixing and using a cheap oil.

Do a search for Decarbing. Basicly you need to add a lot of seafoam to your fuel.
