I have a small (10-12g) mounted galvanized tank under the transom. Restoring boat and need to replace the tank. Would like to know what material is going to hold up well and not break the bank. Plastic, aluminum, galvanized, fiberglass and SS are all choices. Also I havent found any leaks in the current tank and have considered coating with a POR-15 type tank coating. I have never been able to locate ethanol free fuel in my area.

Suggest plastic or aluminum
If your doing a Original Restro so it will be worth more, then need to do original

Can find many premade tanks, just need to find one that will work close enough

Fiberglass and gasoline/alcohol are not well suited. The fiberglass can dissolve in alcohol.

SS will bust the budget.

Aluminum will hold up for 25 years in salt water, longer in fresh.

Plastic is forever.

Steel tanks are good, but susceptible to rust.

if you have a steel tank, its almost 50 years old or older

I would not use any POR-15 product since they changed their formulations. If you want to keep the original tank, take the tank to your local radiator shop, they have some great tank liner.

or get aluminum or poly.

My vote definitely goes to plastic. I changed to plastic in 2001, have never been sorry. Reasonable price, durable and as said earlier last forever.
