Re: best fishing line?

Oops... Hit wrong key... I'm a believer in Berkley Big Game, and change it often. During tournament season I'd change my line about once every two to three weeks. Just change it down to the backing line. As for braid, I like Power Pro.

Re: best fishing line?

I wouldn't use silicone spray, its about 95% solvent, often tricloroethane, really nasty stuff. I heard of guys using PAM ice fishing to keep the line from icing up, but I never tried it.

Tri-clor has been band from use in non-industrial applications since the mid-90's. There are 100's of silicon sprays that are non-toxic and environmentally friendly. Even food and medical grades

One of these is the formulation of a popular Silicon Spray. Of the other two formulations, One is PAM and the other is Reel Magic.

Can you tell which is which?

Hydrocarbon propellant 68-476-86-8
Aliphatic Hydrocarbon) 142-82-5
Polydimethylsiloxane 63148-62-9

POLYDIMETHYLSILOXANE - 63148-62-9
PETROLEUM DISTILLATE - 64741-66-8
1,1-DIFLUOROETHANE -75-37-6

ETHANOL #64-17-5
NITROUS OXIDE #10024-97-2

if you use food grade silicone its very good....no solvents....thats what most line conditioners are made of.....if its safe on food ..its good for line....

Most line conditioners are loaded with solvents. Here is the formulation for Blakemore's Reel Magic

POLYDIMETHYLSILOXANE - 63148-62-9
PETROLEUM DISTILLATE - 64741-66-8
1,1-DIFLUOROETHANE -75-37-6

'nuther vote here for Power Pro. I run it on all my (non-fly) rods from ultralight to musky. Love it, love it, love it.

edit: in fact, Power Pro pulled in the 40lb flathead in my avatar.

I have used Power Pro and like it....BUT I found one problem It is very UV septicle....it degrades in UV....and then you start to get break offs...I decided to try another braid that a lot of the guys i met in tournaments say is a good line.....Tuff line.....after a month of the rods on the boat exposed all the time..the color of the line has not fadded like pro does....the line seems to have a wax coating also....have not had a break off yet..and I toss heavy baits....swim-baits and 1oz jigs....and fish some heavy weeds....

Power Pro and Tuff Line are both made from material (Spectra and Dyneema) which is highly resistant to UV. Yes, the colors will fade in sunlight but it does not affect the fibers themselves. If your having issues with PP you'll have the same issues with TL

What # test PP are you using? For some reason #30 is suspect out of the box. Don?t know why, it always has been susceptible to break off. Wind knots and cracked guides causes a large percentage of mystery breaks off in braids.

Re: best fishing line?

I had break offs with both the 30 and 50 pound pro...I called them...they wanted a 3 foot section of both lines..I sent them to them I got 2 new spools....now the tuff line did not fade on me at all....and not a break off yet....the line itself feels waxy...and my guides are good..most have recoil guides..so no inserts to crack.....no wear grooves either....

Now I am not the only one who had this problem.....a few I fish with had the same thing....

last year i had numerous break offs fishing structure...seen pro fraying..now this year fishing same areas...boulder fields under water..nothing..no breaks or frays....

I'm surprised that your having abrasion problems with the #50. Tons of surf fisherman use it and complaints are rare.

What kind of fishing are you doing? How long are your leaders?

Re: best fishing line?

I am doing freshwater bass fishing....I fish a lot of submerged timber and lots of rock fields....the thing is i was not the only one having problems....a few others I fish with were also..even when we fish a tournament in NY we started talking gear and stuff and the line came up...and a few from NY club mentions break offs....I have 2 spools here and i just got a new Shimano calcutta reel will try the new stuff Pro sent me ..

also my leaders are 18-24 inch flouro leaders....and its not the leader snapping as i recovered a floating swim bait that had 2 feet of braid attached to the leader..I was stuck on some pads and pulled and broke

I use Power Pro 65 pound test. Green. Only broke one time on me when a sturgeon rolled it. Cast real nice and is thin. Handles the elements nice too.

I've had "mystery" issues with #30 and lighter PP and changed over to Sufix braid on the ligher stuff. I have #65 and #80 PP on my trolling and chunking rods and have never had an issue.

FWIW: I'm a salt guy. We fish a lot of shell bars and rock jettys. Lots of a abrasion issues when jigging with braid. Use a 28-30" mono leader to keep the braid up off the bottom with works pretty well.

Re: best fishing line?

In your opinion, what do you think is the best fishing line? Thank you.
I caught one this big ... maybe not the best line, but the most often used line! :D
