I think a Sea Ray Amberjack 270 would be ideal. Combines trailerability, decent ride, fishing features, 4 berths, and water sports, in one package.

I like the Amberjack a lot!! Towing around a tube is not the problem as much as Marine stadium was. Anything above 18 degrees of deadrise is going to be "tippy". But anything less than that and the ride under 30 ft. and over 20MPH is going to be rough . . . Another compromise to consider.

My boat, a 2000 Regal 2550 LSC, is like a mini-Amberjack. It's a big-block powered, 4-berth, stepped-hull, sport cuddy with fishing features (removable side glass panels, removable bench seat and sun pad, raw water wash down, live well, fish box, rod holders, and built-in tackle boxes). I found the mix of fishing, trailerability and sleeping berths an ideal and unique mix. They never sold well and are pretty uncommon. It has 24 degrees of deadrise at transom, but I don't find it all tippy. Might be the exagerrated reverse chines that add stability.

Anyway, if I had to replace it with something newer, a 270 Amberjack would be on the short list. A Pursuit Drummond Island Runner currently tops that list though, I love those.

I didn't think about the reverse chine issue...I wonder is the Larson Cabrio 857 has exagerrated reverse chines....Has anyone seen this boat yet at a boat show?

That's a beautiful boat, great style, but not the best cockpit for entertaining; Larson clearly traded cockpit space for a bigger cabin (not a bad thing, all boats are compromises, it just depends on your priorities). If you planned to slip the boat and use it like a weekend place, a big cabin/small cockpit would be a good thing. If you are trailering it and entertaining friends more than you are spending nights aboard, you want as much cockpit space as possible. Trust me, adult guests NEVER hang out in the cabin (kids love it though, regardless of the size).

This trade of cockpit for cabin is a big reason for my recommendation of the Amberjack. And yeah the Amberjack cockpit is not sexy, but in the real world that bench seat and wide-open deck are really the best way to go (L shapped seating looks stylish, but people can't really use both corner seats because their knees collide).

One other thing to note, full camper canvas makes the cockpit a great place to be in crappy weather. I think it's a must-have option and keeps the large cockpit/small cabin from becoming a liability when the rain starts. I enjoy using my boat in nasty weather with the canvas up.

Also, the major thing to worry about with any flybridge-style boat when trailering is the bridge clearance. That can make for some interesting situations for low hanging phone/power lines and bridges. May not be a major issue where you are, but it's something to consider.

Yeah I should have put on my orginal post I would be using the boat for overnighting only about 25% of the time vs. entertaining guest 75% of the time

You had trailerability as your #1 priority, that made it pretty clear to me. Of course, my priorities are almost identical to yours, so it's really easy for me to relate.

I don't have an Amberjack, mine's a 2000 Regal 2550 LSC, it's like a mini-Amberjack. See post 25 is this same thread. I have had it for 7 years.

plooney,
From what you said about your priorities, I would think that a large cuddy cabin would be more in line with what you are looking for instead of the express cruiser. Basically less cabin more cockpit space. Something like one of these:
Regal 2750 http://www.regalboats.com/2750
Crownline 286 SC http://crownline.com/mymodel/286-sc/
Chaparral 285 http://www.chaparralboats.com/2011/chaparral/Chaparral-Boat.php?boat_id=54&page=home
Rinker Captiva 276 CC http://www.rinkerboats.com/boats/RNK-276-CC
Cobalt 273 http://www.cobaltboats.com/v12/our_boats/273/index.php

Those are all 2012's so I don't know if they meet your price range, but any of them 2-3 years old should easily be in your price range.

I don't think any of those sleep 4. The Amberjack is really more like a big cuddy than an express, but it (like my boat) also has mid cabin berths suitable for kids.

With a canvas enclosure and filler cushions in the cockpit you could sleep 4. Since he's only talking of overnighting about 25% of the time, say 6-8 times a year, it's at least something to consider.
