Ayuh,.... I'd leave 3/8" - 1/2", just to act as strengthenin' structure, to stiffen the tabs,.....

A totally flat plate is easily bent,.....
With the corner on each side, it's considerably stiffer,....

Most of the standard tabs that Bennett puts out (according to tabman) are straight planes with no fins. The steel is 1/16" thick so I think would really take a lot to bend.... But I get your recommendation and am thinking about leaving a little....
